The moment was a reaction to Potter’s quip—not a comment from Gyökeres on the case.
What did Graham Potter say?
Potter was explaining that illness had led to withdrawals from Sweden’s camp. GOAL quoted him saying: “We’ve been hit with an infection or a bug,” then adding, “Not ideal, but it happens. So we’ve called in some players who have been fantastic.”
He then joked about the absences: “In terms of how many withdrawals, we’ve had a similar number to Man City’s charges, I think.” GOAL reported that Potter followed with, “Too soon?” and that journalists in the room reacted with gasps and laughter.
Why was Viktor Gyökeres trying not to laugh?
Gyökeres was seated beside Potter, and GOAL reported that cameras caught the Arsenal striker visibly suppressing a laugh after the joke. The clip’s reported appeal is the contrast between a routine squad update and Potter’s topical punchline. There is no reported statement from Gyökeres about Manchester City’s case, so his facial expression should not be read as an endorsement or opinion on the verdict.

What was Manchester City found guilty of?
The joke referred to the Premier League’s disciplinary case against Manchester City. The Associated Press reported that the league announced the independent commission’s verdict on 29 September 2026. The commission found City guilty of serious financial breaches over a nine-season period and of most charges related to failure to cooperate. AP said the commission found that City used “sham” contracts intended to artificially inflate revenue and reduce costs by more than £900 million.
The case involved 115 charges, according to AP’s 2026 reporting. City disputed the findings and said it would appeal. The verdict is not itself a final sanctions outcome: AP reported that sanctions are a separate step. Premier League chief executive Richard Masters called the decision “the most significant in Premier League history,” as quoted by AP.
