The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 2:06 pm AWST on Saturday, 3 October 2026, for parts of Western Australia’s South Interior, naming Warburton among places that may be affected. The warning cited heavy rain that could lead to flash flooding over the following several hours. Its issuance is confirmed; whether it remained active later that day is not established here.
What the Warburton warning said
The warning described severe thunderstorms developing across central parts of the South Interior district. It said a trough interacting with moist, unstable air, along with strong upper-level winds, could support organised storms capable of becoming severe.
The warning stated: “Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours.” Warburton, a remote Aboriginal community on the Great Central Road, was among the places named as potentially affected.
What residents and travellers should do
Emergency WA’s storm advice, as reported by PerthNow, told people in the area “you need to act now and stay safe”. The reported preparation steps were to secure loose outdoor items, prepare an emergency kit, review the household plan and be ready to stay indoors.

Safety instructions attributed to DFES in the warning include:
- Take shelter indoors, away from windows.
- Stay away from trees and power lines, and avoid drains and streams.
- Do not drive into water when its depth and current are unknown.
- If heavy rain makes visibility poor while driving, pull over and park with hazard lights on until the rain clears.
The reported emergency-kit items include a battery-powered radio, torch, spare batteries and a first-aid kit.

A warning issuance does not confirm that an alert is still active. The available reporting does not establish the warning’s status at 11:29:52 UTC on 3 October 2026. Check the Bureau of Meteorology or Emergency WA for current warning status and any revised instructions before making travel or safety decisions.
An ABC Emergency alert surfaced in search results is for a November 2025 warning and is explicitly marked out of date; it is not evidence of the October 2026 warning’s current status.
