Australia’s Olympic lacrosse campaign takes its next step on October 5, when the 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships are scheduled to begin on the Sunshine Coast. Grace Fujinaga and Marcus Wertheim, described in an October 3 report as American-raised players with family ties to Australia, are part of the story behind the host nation’s push. A top-five finish would send Australia to the 2027 world championship—not directly to the LA28 Olympics.
Why Fujinaga and Wertheim are playing for Australia
An October 3, 2026 report by eTicketing.co says Fujinaga was born in Sydney to American parents and moved to the United States as a child. The report describes Wertheim as raised in St. James, New York, with a mother born in Melbourne. It says both players later moved to Australia after playing professionally in the United States. These biographical details come from that secondary report; the official tournament sources establish the event and qualification rules, not the players’ backgrounds.
The report says Fujinaga returned to play club lacrosse in Australia and quoted her saying she “simply fell in love with the spot and the people.” It attributes to Wertheim a desire to represent Australia in honor of his mother. Those are remarks as reported by eTicketing.co, not independently verified interview transcripts.
What the Sunshine Coast result would—and would not—mean
The Asia-Pacific championships are a continental step in a three-stage Olympic qualification route. The top five teams in each gender’s competition advance to the 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships, which will have 16 teams per gender and serve as the primary Olympic qualifier. The Sunshine Coast tournament itself does not award LA28 places.

| Stage | What happens | Olympic significance |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 continental championships | Top five teams per gender advance from the Asia-Pacific event to the 2027 world championship. | Advancement only; no Olympic place is awarded here. |
| 2027 World Lacrosse Sixes Championships | A 16-team field per gender competes. | Five Olympic places per gender are awarded. |
| Final qualifying tournament, early 2028 | The next six eligible teams receive another qualifying opportunity. | The final Olympic place per gender is decided. |
World Lacrosse says the United States, as host, qualifies automatically subject to participation requirements. For Australia, therefore, reaching the 2027 championship is necessary progress, not a guarantee of an Olympic berth.
When and where the championships take place
The 2026 Asia-Pacific Sixes Lacrosse Championships are scheduled for October 5–10 at Sunshine Coast Stadium in the Kawana Sports Precinct, Queensland. As of October 3, the competition is imminent but has not begun. World Lacrosse’s event page lists 11 men’s teams and 10 women’s teams, with Australia entered in both competitions.

Why the players value the sixes format
The eTicketing.co report presents both athletes as fans of sixes, describing their view of it as fast-moving and accessible to spectators. It attributes to Fujinaga the line, “It was truly built for the Olympic setup,” and her view that “It’s much simpler for spectators to understand the rules.” Wertheim is quoted saying “you have to be a complete lacrosse player to play Sixes, playing both sides of the field.” These are opinions and quotations as reproduced in that report.
