Defender Luke Ryan said the meeting included no discussion or footage of the late collapse, though he expects the team to take lessons from the defeat, whether through video, discussion or a new strategy.
What did Fremantle review at its first team-wide meeting?
Ryan told 6PR, in comments reported by The West Australian, that the Thursday meeting reviewed the whole finals campaign rather than focusing on the Grand Final. He pointed to the qualifying final against Hawthorn as a performance the team got wrong, alongside things it got right against Geelong in the semifinal and against Sydney.
That broader review meant the Grand Final’s final quarter was not discussed and footage from it was not shown in the meeting. Ryan said he was unsure whether the team would watch that footage in pre-season, so his account describes what happened at this meeting—not a decision to avoid reviewing the finish altogether.
Why the late finish is difficult to move on from
Brisbane beat Fremantle 96–89 in the Grand Final on 26 September 2026. ABC News described Brisbane’s comeback as a five-minute sequence after Fremantle had controlled much of the day’s clearances, territory and aerial contests.

According to The West Australian, Fremantle led by 17 points after Patrick Voss kicked a set shot with 197 seconds remaining. Brisbane then kicked four late goals to take the result. Ryan said the closeness made the loss hard to put aside in the following week: “You can’t really block it out, just because of how close we were.”
Ryan says the team still needs to learn from the defeat
Although the meeting did not cover the final quarter, Ryan said Fremantle would need to take learnings from the loss. He left open how the team might do that: “if it’s not vision, talking about it, or coming up with a new strategy.” He did not say which approach the club will choose.

Ryan also said he believed Fremantle could return to the biggest stage. His stated goal was sustained top-four contention, rather than a radical overhaul: “We don’t need to get 20 per cent (better), we can go one, two, three per cent and hopefully sustain that for a long time.” That percentage language was Ryan’s description of incremental improvement, not a measured performance target.
