The G7 has announced a coordinated release of 100 million barrels through the International Energy Agency (IEA), but it has not promised Australian drivers cheaper fuel. The release is to begin immediately and run over four months, with a substantial amount of diesel frontloaded in the first 20 days. Whether that action lowers Australian petrol or diesel prices—and by how much or when—has not been established.
What did the G7 announce?
In a statement on 2 October 2026, G7 leaders said they would implement a coordinated release through the IEA of 100 million barrels, beginning immediately and extending over four months. The stated purpose is to support global energy security and market stability.
The statement calls for a “frontloaded substantial diesel release within the first 20 days” by G7 members and partners. It does not provide a country-by-country schedule or specify how much diesel will be released to each market. The IEA said Executive Director Fatih Birol had been asked to “take this work forward in the coming days and weeks”; that refers to follow-up work, not a forecast of pump prices.
Is the 100 million barrels entirely new supply?
Not necessarily. The G7 statement says the leaders are taking fulfilled commitments into account. In its 2 October update, the IEA reported that about 325 million barrels of the 400 million barrels pledged in the earlier collective action on 11 March had been released by that date.

The official wording does not fully explain how the newly announced 100 million barrels relate to each country’s earlier contribution or how the volume is allocated. It is therefore safer to describe this as the G7’s coordinated release commitment, rather than claim that all 100 million barrels are wholly additional to previous action.
Will petrol prices go down in Australia?
The announcement does not guarantee a reduction at Australian bowsers. Neither the G7 statement nor the IEA’s update specifies an Australian retail-price cut, a cents-per-litre saving, or a date when Australian motorists might see an effect. A release intended to stabilise supply could influence markets, but any benefit at Australian pumps would depend on how that market effect is transmitted; the cited statements do not establish the outcome.

Will the release lower diesel prices, and when will it reach the market?
Diesel is the clearest near-term priority in the G7 statement: it calls for a substantial amount to be released within the first 20 days. That is a commitment about the release’s timing, not a country-specific delivery timetable or a promise of lower Australian diesel prices. The announcement gives no Australian arrival date or estimate of a bowser-price effect.

Australia has introduced domestic supply measures of its own. They are separate from the G7 announcement and should not be treated as evidence that the international release will produce a particular Australian price change.

Temporary fuel-quality change in March
On 12 March 2026, the Australian Government said it was temporarily amending fuel-quality standards for 60 days to allow higher sulfur levels. It estimated the change could enable around 100 million litres of petrol per month that would otherwise have been exported to be blended into domestic supply. The government said Ampol would prioritise redirected supply for regions experiencing shortages and for the wholesale spot market serving independent distributors and harvesters.
Stockholding settings extended in September
On 19 September 2026, the government extended a temporary reduction in minimum stockholding obligations for petrol and diesel until 31 January 2027. Under the setting, qualifying suppliers can hold 20% less fuel in reserve if they commit to delivering more fuel to the domestic market and prioritising regional supply. The government said the extension was intended to maintain flexibility during higher regional demand, including harvest and holiday travel.
