If you want the cycle of preparing at safety, venturing into danger for rewards, and dealing with the consequences of failure, the best fit depends on what you want to risk. Insurmountable puts a climber’s life on the line through permadeath; Stolen Realm lets you opt into permadeath or retain unlocks after a failed run; Across the Obelisk makes party and deck decisions central; Stranded: Alien Dawn stretches risk across a settlement; and The Persistence makes scarce ammunition and clone-based continuation shape each encounter. These are recommendations by risk mechanism, not a claim that one game is objectively best.
Insurmountable: every climb risks the character
Choose Insurmountable if you want explicit permadeath and survival management, rather than a forgiving run where failure simply sends you back to try again. Xbox describes procedurally generated mountains, dynamic weather, day-and-night changes, and unpredictable events. You must manage vital conditions, search locations for equipment, and make decisions that can be final. The danger is cumulative: conditions and hazards make each choice on the climb matter. See the Xbox listing; its current price and availability can change. The listing displayed Xbox Series X|S optimization when accessed.
Stolen Realm: choose how much failure should cost
Stolen Realm is a simultaneous turn-based tactical RPG playable solo or in six-player drop-in/drop-out co-op, according to Xbox Wire’s 2024 launch article. Its risks come from combat decisions, skills, bargains with demons, and whether to keep looted armor and weapons. The game offers a full campaign across six difficulty levels, so you can play without making every failed attempt final.
Hardcore permadeath or persistent unlocks
Hardcore mode adds permadeath for players who want a character’s survival to be at stake. In roguelike mode, failure still contributes to permanent unlocks, making a lost attempt less of a dead end. Xbox Wire reported that the development team described more than 300 skills and more than 700 unique items; those are developer-supplied feature counts, not independently audited totals.

Across the Obelisk: risk decisions shared through a deck
If you want to plan with other players, Across the Obelisk is a co-op roguelite deckbuilder that the publisher says supports solo play or up to three friends, with cross-play. Its publisher describes choices such as helping people met on the journey or focusing on loot. That makes risk a party-level question as well as a tactical one: what to prioritize, and how to shape the group’s deck and resources through the run.
Three modes, three kinds of run
- Adventure Mode: four acts with procedurally generated events.
- Obelisk Mode: a randomized roguelike challenge.
- Weekly Challenge: a predetermined deck and map.
Paradox’s game page lists more than 500 cards, more than 300 items, and 16 heroes. These are publisher feature counts, not independently verified statistics.

Stranded: Alien Dawn: risk management across a settlement
Stranded: Alien Dawn suits players who would rather manage a colony’s exposure to danger than stake one character on a single run. Paradox describes limited supplies, weather, illness, hostile creatures, and multiple crises threatening a group of survivors. Random story events and consequential actions force choices between immediate needs and longer-term outcomes. The central risk is whether your settlement can absorb the next setback without compromising its future.

The Persistence: decide when not to fight
The Persistence is a survival horror roguelike/lite set on a doomed space colony. In Xbox Wire’s 2020 launch article, death is followed by a fresh clone, with DNA and other progression opportunities. That continuation changes the cost of failure, but it does not make every encounter safe: weapons have limited ammunition, so choosing whether to fight or avoid danger is part of the core tension. The cited availability information is historical; check the current Xbox Store listing to confirm whether it is available to buy now.
Choose by what you want to put at risk
| Game | Main stake | How risk works | Play style and multiplayer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Insurmountable | The climber’s life | Permadeath, vital-condition management, and unpredictable climbing hazards | Solo details not stated on the cited Xbox listing |
| Stolen Realm | Tactical position, loot, and—if you choose hardcore—a character | Combat and loot choices; optional permadeath; permanent unlocks in roguelike mode | Solo or six-player drop-in/drop-out co-op |
| Across the Obelisk | A party’s run and its deck decisions | Roguelike challenges, randomized events, and choices about helping or pursuing loot | Solo or up to three friends; publisher says cross-play is supported |
| Stranded: Alien Dawn | A settlement and its future | Scarce supplies, environmental threats, crises, and consequential decisions | Xbox platform and multiplayer details not established by the cited publisher page |
| The Persistence | A run, scarce ammunition, and the player’s approach to combat | Death brings a fresh clone with progression opportunities; ammunition is limited | Xbox One, according to Xbox Wire’s 2020 launch article; current availability should be checked |
If the appeal is a gear-up, venture out, and extract loop, these games offer related but not identical stakes. For permanent character loss, start with Insurmountable or opt into hardcore in Stolen Realm. For a failure that can still move progression forward, consider Stolen Realm’s roguelike mode or The Persistence’s clone system. For planning with others, Across the Obelisk is the clearest documented co-op choice. For danger that accumulates across a community, choose Stranded: Alien Dawn.
