Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida thinks Sony and Nintendo should avoid rushing into new console generations: in an interview with The Verge, he argued that players are happy with PS5 and Switch 2 while component costs rise and household budgets remain limited. It is his opinion—not a launch-plan announcement from either company.
What did Shuhei Yoshida say?
Asked about Xbox’s messaging around its next-generation Project Helix and possible business models, Yoshida said Sony and Nintendo might push back their next-generation launches because of the cost of goods. He then put his view plainly: “And I think they should try to keep the current generation as long as possible, because I think people are very happy using PS5 and Switch 2.” The remark comes from his interview with The Verge, as reported by VGC.
Yoshida’s reasoning was that component costs are rising for PCs and consoles, while consumers have finite budgets. He suggested that people with a PS5, Switch 2 or capable PC may keep playing on what they already own rather than replace it. He also said he did not think many players or developers were asking for more hardware power. Those are Yoshida’s observations, not independently measured findings about demand across the industry.
Does this mean Sony will delay PS6?
No. Yoshida is a former PlayStation executive offering his view on what Sony and Nintendo should do; he is not announcing a PS6 schedule or speaking for either company. The sources here establish no release date for PS6 or a Nintendo successor.

Sony has described PS5 as “a very successful platform among the current generation of game consoles” and said its sales performance and market-share expansion were satisfactory in its FY2024 Corporate Strategy Meeting Q&A. That is company context, not confirmation of how long PS5 will remain the current generation. Sony also described its initial 25 million-unit PS5 target as an aggressive goal based on projections made during a COVID-era tailwind; it is a historical target, not a current sales or installed-base figure. Sony’s Q&A does not provide a next-generation timetable.
What has Nintendo said about the Switch 2 lifecycle?
Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in the company’s 2025 shareholder Q&A that Switch 2 had just launched and that it was too early to discuss its lifecycle. He added that Nintendo aims for as many consumers as possible to enjoy it for as long as possible. That is a stated goal, not a promise of a particular number of years. Furukawa also confirmed Switch 2 compatibility with Switch software. Nintendo’s shareholder Q&A offers the company’s position without setting a successor date.

Why does Yoshida single out Xbox as a possible exception?
Yoshida’s comparison is about competitive circumstances, not confirmed hardware timing. As VGC reports it, he thought Xbox might have more reason to press ahead given its competitive position and plans for different hardware and broader ecosystem access. That interpretation does not establish when an Xbox system—or any other console—will launch.

Yoshida’s case is that the value of a new generation depends on more than whether a manufacturer can build a more powerful machine. Component costs and the amount players can spend matter, as does whether existing hardware already serves their needs. His comment about people being happy with PS5 and Switch 2 is an informed opinion, not proof that every player or developer is satisfied.

For current owners, the practical point is modest: Yoshida sees a reason for Sony and Nintendo to let their present systems run longer, but neither company has used his interview to announce a delay or define a lifecycle. Nintendo has separately said it wants Switch 2 to be enjoyed for as long as possible while declining to discuss its lifecycle so soon after launch; Sony’s public assessment of PS5’s current-generation performance has been positive.
