Control Resonant is right to take the series beyond the Oldest House—not because a warped Manhattan is automatically better, but because it gives Dylan Faden a story the House could not. Jesse entered the Bureau as an outsider. Dylan grew up inside its confinement; for him, stepping into the city is the unfamiliar journey.
Why leaving the Oldest House fits Dylan’s story
The Oldest House gave the first Control a powerful frame: Jesse arrived as a stranger, and players learned the Bureau’s shifting corridors and paranormal rules as she did. The House’s limits were part of its appeal. It made discovery feel deliberate and kept the strange institution at the center of the experience.
Control Resonant reverses that relationship. Dylan Faden, Jesse’s brother, is the playable lead. Remedy’s premise places him outside the place that shaped his life, navigating a Manhattan transformed by paranatural forces. The city is not just a larger backdrop; it is the unfamiliar territory in Dylan’s story. Remedy creative director Mikael Kasurinen described the games as having a relationship “like they are two sides of the same coin” in an interview with Tom’s Guide.
That reversal is the strongest reason the change feels right. Jesse’s first journey was inward, into an institution whose rules she had to uncover. Dylan’s is outward, into ordinary urban geography made strange. This reading follows Remedy’s stated premise and design intent; it is an argument about fit, not proof that every player will prefer the new setting.

What the Manhattan setting changes
From one shifting headquarters to authored city zones
Remedy describes Manhattan as reshaped by supernatural events and divided into distinct zones to explore. Its gameplay overview also discusses narrative quests and a designed experience intended to avoid filling a huge map with grind. That structure offers room to test the series’ paranatural ideas against streets and city spaces rather than relying on the House’s enclosed architecture.
The trade-off is real: an open urban setting can lose the Oldest House’s concentrated claustrophobia. But the change makes thematic sense if the city’s scale and distorted landmarks express how unfamiliar the outside world is to Dylan. Whether its spaces are as compelling to play through as the House remains a question for the finished game and players, not something established by the design description alone.

A different action vocabulary
Remedy presents Resonant as a third-person action-RPG. Dylan’s announced weapon, the Aberrant, is a shapeshifting melee weapon, alongside supernatural abilities and progression. That suggests a combat identity distinct from the first game’s framing of Jesse’s journey, and it suits a sequel willing to change more than its scenery. These are developer-described features, not independently tested results.
Leaving the House does not leave Jesse behind
Dylan takes the lead, but the sibling story continues. Remedy says Jesse remains central even as Dylan drives the plot, keeping the Faden family’s shared history connected to this new perspective. The sequel can therefore change protagonist and setting without treating the first game’s emotional thread as finished.

The balance matters: a new lead gives the series a reason to revisit its world from another angle, while Jesse’s continuing role preserves narrative continuity. The announced premise does not establish exactly how much time players will spend with her, so the significance of that role will depend on the game itself.

The case for leaving the Oldest House is ultimately about perspective. Jesse’s story made the House legible by entering it; Dylan’s can make the outside world strange by showing it through someone who was confined within. Manhattan has to earn its place through execution, but as a creative choice, it gives Control Resonant a clear reason to move on.
