But it is not automatically cheaper, and the available price snapshots do not prove that PC prices across the board are spiraling. The useful comparison is what each complete setup costs for the games you play and the way you want to play them.
Are desktop and handheld prices really out of control?
There is no like-for-like evidence here that desktop, laptop and handheld prices are all rising at the same rate. A Plug PCs catalog snapshot dated October 2, 2026, lists median prices of $2,555 for 1,150 desktop systems, $2,029 for 1,285 laptops and $140 for 71 gaming handhelds. The desktop category showed a 3.2% increase over 30 days; laptop and handheld categories showed no change. These are broad catalog categories, not gaming-only or equivalent-performance comparisons, and the low handheld median may reflect a different model mix from new premium devices. Plug PCs’ PC market data therefore offers context, not proof of a general price crisis.
Specific products illustrate why category medians can mislead. ASUS’s US product pages showed the ROG Xbox Ally (2025) at $599.99 and the ROG Xbox Ally X (2025) at $999.99 in a 2026 snapshot. Those prices describe particular handhelds, not the whole handheld market. Tom’s Guide reported a 2 TB Lenovo Legion Go 2 at $2,849 in an article dated April 14, 2026, and said new or near-new handhelds in the $400–$650 range could be found at that time. Those are dated examples, not live prices or a guarantee of current stock.
Likewise, desktop deal prices are configuration-specific. PC Gamer’s 2026 guide listed an ABS Cyclone Aqua with an RTX 5060 at $899, an iBuyPower Element SE with an RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB at $1,299 and an MSI Codex Z2C with an RTX 5070 at $1,399. The guide noted compromises in CPU or memory for some of those systems; its Skytech Archangel 5 RTX 5070 example, with 32 GB DDR5 and a 1 TB SSD, was listed at $1,699. None is a controlled comparison against a laptop or handheld, and guide prices can change. PC Gamer’s cheap gaming PC deals guide is useful for examples, not a market-wide price measure.

When does a gaming laptop make more sense?
A laptop bundles the computer, display, keyboard and battery. If you would otherwise have to buy a monitor and peripherals for a desktop, or you need to move your gaming setup between rooms or locations, that all-in-one convenience has real value. A handheld is easier to carry and play away from a desk, but its smaller screen and controls are a different experience. The right choice depends on whether you prioritize portability, screen size, performance, upgrade options or a compact device you can use without a desk.
- Choose a laptop if you want a larger built-in screen and conventional keyboard, need a single device for gaming and other computing, and can accept limited upgradeability and gaming time away from a charger.
- Choose a desktop if you primarily play at one desk, want more flexibility to upgrade components, and can account for the monitor and other peripherals in your budget.
- Choose a handheld if compact size and play in your hands matter more than a large display or desktop-style controls, and the games you want work well on that device.
A handheld’s listed price should not be compared with a desktop tower as though the products deliver the same use. ASUS lists an 80 Wh battery and a 120 Hz display for the Ally X, but those specifications do not establish battery life in a particular game. ASUS also says the device can “Stream games directly from the cloud with Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) — no long installations, just instant play.” That is manufacturer product copy, not an independent test; cloud play also depends on the service, game availability and network conditions. ASUS’s ROG Xbox Ally X product page lists its specifications and features.

A concrete budget-laptop example: Lenovo LOQ 15 Gen 10
PC Gamer named the Lenovo LOQ 15 Gen 10 its best budget gaming laptop in a 2026 guide, listing a $1,079 / £900 price snapshot. Listed configurations include a GeForce RTX 5050 or RTX 5060, 16 GB of DDR5 memory, a 512 GB SSD and a 15-inch 1080p 144 Hz IPS display. These are guide details, not a guarantee that every configuration is available at that price in your region.
The graphics-card label alone is not enough to predict performance: PC Gamer’s tested LOQ RTX 5060 configuration ran at 115 W, and its review reports game benchmarks for that specific machine. Laptop cooling and GPU power limits affect what a given GPU can sustain, so compare the precise laptop configuration and test results with the games and settings you care about. Do not assume an RTX 5060 laptop performs like an RTX 5060 desktop. Check the PC Gamer gaming laptop guide for the listed model and review context, then confirm current configuration, price and availability with a retailer.

How to compare the real cost and gaming experience
Before deciding, compare the systems you can actually buy in your region rather than relying on a headline GPU name or category median.
- Calculate the complete purchase. For a desktop, include a monitor, keyboard, mouse and any other peripherals you need. For a laptop or handheld, check whether a dock, controller or other accessories are necessary for your intended setup. Compare the checkout total, not just the tower or device price.
- Match the game and target settings. Look for performance evidence at your intended resolution and graphics settings. An advertised GPU model does not make laptop, desktop and handheld performance equivalent.
- Check the exact configuration. Record the GPU variant and laptop power limit where stated, plus CPU, memory capacity and type, storage capacity and screen. The cheaper prebuilt deal may trade down on CPU, memory or storage.
- Consider upgrades and ownership constraints. Confirm which memory and storage components can be upgraded, along with warranty terms and retailer availability. A desktop often offers more component flexibility; verify the specific machine rather than assuming every part is replaceable.
- Account for where and how you play. Consider portability, battery, weight and screen size. A gaming laptop’s battery is not a promise of long unplugged gaming sessions; check independent battery testing for the specific model and workload.
- Check your game library and operating needs. Confirm that the games, launchers, anti-cheat systems and operating system features you rely on work on the device. This matters especially when choosing a handheld form factor.
- Verify the current deal. Recheck the exact model, configuration, regional price, stock, warranty and total checkout cost on the day you buy. The cited prices are dated snapshots, not live quotes.
So, should a bargain hunt end at a gaming laptop?
It can, if portability and the built-in screen replace costs or compromises that matter to you. The LOQ 15 Gen 10 is a concrete budget-laptop option to investigate, while desktop deals can offer a different balance of price, components and upgrade flexibility, and handhelds solve a different portability problem. The evidence does not establish that laptops universally cost less or deliver better gaming value. Decide by comparing exact configurations and total costs against your own games and setup needs.
