- Choose fabric and design the dress. Select from materials including cotton, linen, wool, silk and velvet, then shape and colour the design.
- Arrange and cut pattern pieces. Lay out pieces on the chosen fabric and cut them. Placement matters: Steam says aligning a pattern with the grain or cutting it on the bias changes the finished dress’s appearance.
- Preview and sew. Check the pieces on a mannequin, then sew them together.
- Decorate the garment. Add details such as buttons, bows, appliqué or lace trims.
- Make garments for customers or sell them. Commissions and a shop window add a light business layer to the creative work.
This is detailed simulation, but the official description does not establish that the game teaches complete, transferable garment-construction skills. Treat its sewing mechanics as part of the game rather than as a substitute for real sewing instruction.

The appeal is not limited to picking a colour or outfit. Does Dressmaker let characters wear the finished clothes?
A commenter in the Reddit discussion says characters do not wear the completed garments. That is an individual community report, not an official feature specification. If seeing characters model finished designs is essential to you, the available sources do not establish that this is part of the game.

Does it run on Steam Deck?
Steam Deck performance is not confirmed in the official information cited here. One Reddit commenter reports good performance on a docked monitor with a mouse and keyboard, but says handheld play involves using the trackpads and triggers.
