Final Fantasy VII Revelation is the third and final game in Square Enix’s remake project, but the available official details do not confirm eight specific changes from the 1997 PlayStation original. What they do confirm is a finale built around airship travel, wide-ranging exploration and evolved battles. The best-supported comparison is therefore a clear look at what Revelation has announced—and what remains unknown—without mistaking changes from Rebirth for features of the final game.
What Revelation has confirmed so far
Square Enix describes Final Fantasy VII Revelation as the third and final entry in its remake series. Its official announcement sets the release date at April 8, 2027, with launches planned for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC. Release plans and platform details may change before launch. Square Enix’s release announcement describes the game as a large-scale adventure featuring Highwind airship travel, an expansive world to explore and evolved battles.
Those details identify broad areas where the finale is intended to differ in scope and play, but they are not a list of eight discrete changes from the PS1 game. No detailed, item-by-item Revelation comparison is established in the cited official materials.
1. It is the finale of a three-game reimagining
The original Final Fantasy VII was one game released in 1997. Revelation is not presented as a standalone remake that retells the complete original in one package; it is the concluding installment of a three-game project. PlayStation describes that project as a reimagining by original creators, with a narrative that does not directly mirror the 1997 story. That establishes a different overall structure, but not Revelation’s precise plot changes. PlayStation’s remake-series guide

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. The Highwind will be part of the adventure
Square Enix specifically highlights travel aboard the Highwind airship. That makes airship travel a confirmed part of Revelation’s announced concept, unlike the original’s single-game structure. The release announcement does not explain exactly how the airship will work: it does not specify its controls, limits, destinations or how much of the world can be reached with it.
3. The world is planned as a broad space to explore
The official description promises a vast world to explore. This signals an emphasis on large-scale world exploration, but it does not establish the map’s exact layout, which regions will be accessible, or how Revelation’s exploration compares feature-for-feature with the PS1 world map.

4. Battles are described as evolved
Square Enix says the finale will have evolved battles. The announcement does not enumerate the changes or say which mechanics from Remake or Rebirth will return. The phrase supports an expectation of further development, not a claim that any particular combat system, ability or party feature is confirmed for Revelation.
Changes documented for Rebirth are not Revelation confirmations
Several of the most concrete comparisons between the remake project and the PS1 original concern Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second game—not Revelation. In a 2023 developer interview, producer Yoshinori Kitase, creative director Tetsuya Nomura and director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed Rebirth’s systems and story. Those examples are useful for understanding the project, but they cannot be transferred to the finale without separate confirmation. PlayStation’s 2023 Rebirth developer interview

- Rebirth’s combat: The interview describes synergy commands and abilities, as well as skill trees. It does not establish Revelation’s combat feature list.
- Rebirth’s structure: Some location order changes in Rebirth, and Wutai was deferred to a later title. That does not confirm Revelation’s location order or destinations.
- Rebirth’s activities: The developers described a larger mini-game offering and said world-map side-content volume was nearly double the main-quest content. That figure applies to Rebirth only, not Revelation.
- Rebirth’s story and scenes: Its story reaches the Forgotten Capital, and its parade sequence changes Cloud’s role so he leads and customizes a unit. Neither detail is evidence of a Revelation-specific change.
How the creators describe adaptation and fidelity
Director Naoki Hamaguchi’s comments offer a useful way to understand the remake project’s approach without pretending they reveal the finale’s plot. In an interview reported by GamesRadar, Hamaguchi said he trusts Kazushige Nojima’s overarching story and does not intend to change it on his own judgment. He also explained that more realistic visuals can make the original timing or passage of time feel implausible, so scene setup and emotional pacing may need adjustment. These remarks support a distinction between preserving a story’s broad direction and adapting how scenes are presented; they do not provide a list of Revelation deviations.
