In OBS, make a study scene and a separate break scene, then add a timer as a text or browser source—or use a video with a countdown already in it. Switch scenes with a hotkey or transition. For a break slate without building an OBS scene, YouTube Live Control Room has a Take a Break option for 1, 3, or 5 minutes; its countdown does not end the break automatically.
Build the countdown and break screen in OBS
- Create two scenes. In OBS, add one scene for your study presentation and another for the break artwork or slate. Scenes are layouts made from sources; OBS’s overview uses “Break” as an example scene name.
- Add your visuals. In the study scene, add the background or study video and the timer. OBS supports text, image, browser, and media sources. The cited OBS source guide does not describe a built-in countdown timer procedure, so use a suitable browser or text-source implementation, or a video asset that already includes a countdown.
- Loop a local video if appropriate. Open the Media Source settings for the file and enable Loop so it restarts when it ends. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported video formats. For a playlist, use the VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Layer and position the timer. In the Sources list, higher sources appear above lower ones. Put the timer above the background, then use the visibility eye to show or hide it and the preview’s transform controls to position or resize it.
- Set up the scene switch. OBS provides Fade and Cut transitions by default. Choose a transition and duration, then switch scenes with a hotkey or Studio Mode. Studio Mode lets you prepare the next scene in the edit area before sending it to the live output.
Use YouTube’s Take a Break slate
YouTube Live Control Room offers a platform-native away slate with countdown choices of 1, 3, or 5 minutes. Start it from Live Control Room when you step away. The break does not automatically end when the countdown reaches zero; return to Live Control Room and end it manually.
You can also add YouTube’s break overlay to OBS as a Browser Source:
- In Live Control Room settings, copy the break overlay URL.
- In OBS, add a Browser Source and paste the URL.
- Set the Browser Source dimensions to match your stream resolution and enable Shutdown source when not visible.
- Test the overlay before going live.
The overlay does not mute other stream audio. Mute your microphone separately before stepping away, and check audio routing if a custom video slate includes sound. YouTube’s custom video slate must be public or unlisted, embeddable, and not a Premiere, members-only, monetized, or copyright-claimed video.

Choose the right setup for your break

Keep a 24/7 study stream running
These OBS and YouTube controls let you present a countdown and break slate, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted unattended streaming.
