For YouTube, start in Live Control Room; for Twitch, use Twitch Inspector. Treat those as diagnostics, not proof of uninterrupted visible video.
What you need to monitor
“The stream is live” can mean several different things. A useful monitor distinguishes these conditions rather than relying on a single green status indicator:
- Platform connection: Is the streaming service receiving a signal from the encoder?
- Stream health: Does the platform report errors or a degraded connection?
- Visible playback: Can a viewer load the broadcast and see moving video rather than a black or frozen image?
- Unattended notification: Will someone be alerted if a problem occurs, rather than discovering it by checking a dashboard later?
The official tools below provide live diagnostics or historical reporting, but the cited documentation does not establish that any one of them guarantees continuous visible playback or sends an unattended alert for every failure.
Monitor a YouTube stream while it is live
Use Live Control Room for platform health
Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room for the active broadcast. YouTube provides stream status, error messages with guidance, and real-time metrics such as concurrent viewers and stream duration. Use the status and error details to diagnose whether YouTube is receiving the stream as expected.

Verify the rendered video separately
If the important failure is a frozen or black picture, check the public playback itself from a separate viewer session or use a monitor you have validated against the rendered feed. This is separate from checking the encoder’s connection: the official dashboard documentation does not promise that its indicators detect every stalled-video condition. Test your chosen check by deliberately interrupting or freezing the feed in a controlled setup, then confirm that the problem is detected and the notification reaches the right person.
Monitor a Twitch broadcast
For Twitch, Twitch Inspector shows a broadcaster their streams from the prior seven days and provides stream-health graphs. Twitch says the broadcaster can inspect their own stream there. It is useful for diagnosing broadcast health, but the documentation does not establish it as a guarantee of visible motion or an unattended frozen-video alert.

Know what Disconnect Protection does
Twitch Disconnect Protection can display an interruption message for up to 90 seconds while a supported encoder attempts to reconnect. If it does not reconnect within that window, the stream ends. This is a short continuity measure, not a monitoring or notification system; confirm how it behaves with your encoder and setup before depending on it.
Check the encoder when connection health is poor
If OBS reports an unstable connection, work through its stream connection troubleshooting. OBS explains that it does not operate streaming servers: it connects to the destination platform. Troubleshooting can therefore include trying a different ingest server and investigating local network or security-software causes. This addresses encoder-to-platform connectivity; it does not independently prove that viewers are receiving a moving picture.

Do not confuse alert overlays with outage monitoring
OBS does not directly provide stream alerts. Third-party alerts can be displayed inside a broadcast using a Browser Source, but an overlay is not evidence that the stream itself is being monitored. Twitch’s alert sets likewise appear in the broadcast through a Browser Source and concern events such as follows, subscriptions, and raids—not stream availability. Keep community-event alerts separate from a tested outage-detection path.
Build a practical monitoring routine
- Check the platform’s live diagnostics. While the broadcast is active, review YouTube Live Control Room or Twitch Inspector for stream-health status and reported errors.
- Check the encoder and connection. If OBS indicates instability, follow its connection troubleshooting, including testing a different ingest server and investigating local network or security-software causes.
- Check what viewers see. Open the actual playback independently when visible video matters. If you use a monitoring service, verify that it checks the rendered feed for frozen or black video, not merely a page or stream endpoint.
- Test the alert path. Simulate a relevant failure in a controlled test, verify detection, and confirm that the notification arrives where someone will see it. Do not assume a dashboard or overlay will alert you.
- Review the stream afterward. YouTube’s post-stream report can include concurrent viewers and chat messages; YouTube says these metrics become available within minutes after the stream ends. This is useful retrospective information, not a substitute for an alert during an unattended broadcast.
