Arnold Schwarzenegger Joins Figure AI for a Real-Life Terminator 2 Robot Sendoff

Figure AI says Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the filmed molten-steel retirement of most of its F.02 robot fleet, in a deliberate Terminator 2 homage.

Figure AI says it retired most of its F.02 humanoid robots by sending them into molten steel at a foundry in Imatra, Finland—and Arnold Schwarzenegger joined the filmed sendoff. The event deliberately echoes Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but it was a planned decommissioning operation, not an improvised stunt or proof that ordinary AI robots can safely handle molten metal.

Did Arnold Schwarzenegger really send AI robots into molten steel?

According to Figure AI’s September 30, 2026 announcement, yes: the company says the F.02 robots really were trained to jump autonomously and then sent to a Finnish foundry to enter molten steel. Schwarzenegger suggested melting the retired machines after Figure asked online how it should retire them, and the company says he wanted to take part in the resulting film.

Figure put the qualification plainly: “In an age of AI-generated footage, it’s worth being clear: we really trained robots to jump autonomously, shipped them to Finland, and had them leap into a vat of molten steel. We hope you enjoy the film.” That is the company’s account of the footage, not an independent verification.

Why did Figure melt its F.02 robots?

Figure says the F.02 generation no longer made sense to maintain as its F.03 fleet grew. It gave two reasons for melting the retired units rather than dismantling each one: protecting proprietary hardware and avoiding the engineering time required to take every machine apart while staff prepared for the F.04 launch. Figure said, “We needed to dispose of the robots in a way that protected our proprietary hardware.”

The company says it contacted foundries in the United States and Mexico, but they declined to accept a robot containing lithium-ion batteries. Figure then arranged the operation at a foundry in Imatra, Finland. The foundry’s name has not been disclosed.

How Figure prepared the robots for the furnace

Figure describes a specific training and disposal operation, not a general-purpose robot skill. Training began at the company’s San Jose campus. The team used stunt-artist movements as references, trained a new AI model in simulation to make the robots jump accurately at an unfamiliar foundry, and practiced with large airbags before the real event.

Figure says the foundry used a 75-ton electric arc furnace. The company reported that the team had 24 hours and six melts available, with a 20-minute window for each melt before the steel cooled and formed a crust. Those are Figure’s figures for this operation, not independently measured values or general specifications for furnaces.

How many Figure robots were melted?

Figure has not published an exact count. It says most of the F.02 fleet is gone and that a few units remain in storage at its headquarters. No precise total for the robots melted is established in the company’s announcement or the contemporaneous coverage.

Why the scene looks like Terminator 2

The sendoff is an intentional Terminator 2: Judgment Day homage. Schwarzenegger’s character ends up in molten steel in the film, and the Figure video borrows that imagery for the robots’ retirement. It is a cinematic reference; the event should not be mistaken for a safety demonstration or evidence that consumer AI robots can safely operate near molten metal.
