Police said the firearm was not fired and no one was injured. Prosecutors later said it had been passed among children before staff stepped in.
What happened at the Canton daycare
Canton Township police responded Monday, September 28, to a report of a toddler with a firearm at Children’s World Early Learning Center. The department’s September 28 statement confirmed an investigation into a weapon at a daycare. The Associated Press reported that the child was 3 years old and removed a loaded, holstered handgun from a backpack in the classroom.
A teacher noticed the gun, intervened and contacted police. According to prosecutors, the firearm was passed to other children before staff intervened. It was not fired, and no injuries were reported, the AP said. The reporting does not identify the backpack’s owner.
What charges were reported, and what is known about the gun
FOX 2 Detroit reported that the parents were arraigned on October 1. The mother was charged with unsafe storage, described in the report as a 93-day misdemeanor. The father, described as a Detroit-area police officer, was charged with fourth-degree child abuse, described as a one-year misdemeanor. These are reported charges, not findings of guilt.

What officials said

The AP summarized Michigan law as requiring firearms to be locked up at home when children are present. That is a limited summary, not a complete explanation of the statute or legal advice. Canton Township Police offers free gun safety locks and firearm safety information. Families can contact the department for details about obtaining a lock and choosing safe-storage practices appropriate to their firearm.
