Use loudness normalization or clip gain to bring recordings into a consistent perceived range, then listen through the playlist and refine the transitions by ear. LUFS measurements help identify level jumps; they do not determine how quiet or dramatic an ambience sequence should feel. There is no single LUFS target that suits every ambience playlist.
Choose where to do the leveling
If you are making one edited file, a local playlist, or audio meant to play across different apps and devices, level the clips in your editing workflow and check the exported result. Do not assume playback normalization will be available everywhere: Spotify says its web player and some third-party devices do not use loudness normalization.
If the playlist will be played in Spotify, its normalization behavior is destination-specific. For Premium listeners, Spotify lists targets of -14 dB LUFS in Normal mode, -11 dB LUFS in Loud mode, and -19 dB LUFS in Quiet mode. It adjusts individual tracks when shuffling an album or playing tracks from multiple albums, as in a playlist; it normalizes an album together so track-to-track gain compensation does not change. These are Spotify playback settings, not universal mastering targets.
Level clips with LUFS or gain
Audacity: match clips for an edited playlist
- Import the ambience recordings and arrange them in playback order.
- Select the clips or audio you want to level, then choose Effect > Volume and Compression > Loudness Normalization.
- Choose a perceived-loudness target appropriate to your project and apply the effect. Audacity’s default is -23 LUFS; that is a software default, not a recommended target for every ambience playlist.
- Keep stereo channels paired if the recording’s left/right balance is intentional. Audacity’s default paired-channel behavior preserves that balance; independent channel normalization is intended for correcting an already unbalanced stereo recording.
- Listen to the sequence and make small clip-gain adjustments where measured matching sounds unnatural or leaves a distracting transition.
Audacity documents loudness normalization as one way to make an equally loud playlist from different sources. It also recommends placing loudness normalization before export when preparing audio for delivery.

Adobe Premiere Pro: Auto-Match clips
- Select the audio clips and tag them as dialogue, music, sound effects, or ambience in the Essential Sound panel as appropriate.
- Expand Loudness and choose Auto-Match.
- Review the measured LUFS level shown beneath the control, then play the clips in sequence and adjust where the match conflicts with the intended sound.
Adobe’s help page for this workflow was last updated January 21, 2026. Auto-Match is an option if you already edit in Premiere Pro; it is not necessary to use that program to level ambience.
Decide whether to match every clip or preserve a sequence
Independent clip matching is useful when unrelated recordings should feel broadly consistent. But ambience often uses distance, softness, and intensity deliberately: distant rain may belong below a close thunder passage. Do not force every clip to the same measured level if that removes the intended contrast.

A shared gain across a whole sequence preserves the loudness relationships already present; matching clips separately evens them more aggressively. The Audio Engineering Society distinguishes track normalization, which changes tracks separately, from album normalization, which applies a shared gain to preserve relative loudness. Its TD1008 v3.13 distribution recommendations say to normalize the loudest track of an album to -14 LUFS, typically resulting in about -16 LUFS integrated album loudness, except for wide-dynamic-range content; where album normalization is unavailable, it recommends normalizing all tracks to -16 LUFS. These are AES distribution recommendations, not mandatory targets for an ambience project.
Check loudness and peaks separately
LUFS describes integrated perceived loudness; peak level is a separate concern. Normalization can raise or lower gain to meet a loudness target, but you should still check for clipping or excessive true peaks. Spotify’s mastering guidance is specific to Spotify: it targets -14 dB integrated LUFS and advises keeping true peak below -1 dBTP for lossy formats. For masters louder than -14 LUFS, Spotify advises below -2 dBTP to reduce the risk of additional encoding distortion. Do not treat those numbers as universal delivery rules.

Audacity’s -23 LUFS default and the -24 LUFS level normally used for US television, as well as the EBU’s -23 LUFS recommendation in television, radio, podcast, and website contexts, illustrate why a target depends on the destination. None establishes a universal ambience-playlist target.
Listen for the problems a meter cannot judge
- Play the full playlist in order, not just isolated clips. Pay particular attention to the start and end of each recording.
- If a transition still feels abrupt after normalization, adjust clip gain in small increments and listen again.
- Preserve meaningful changes in distance or intensity rather than correcting every difference as an error.
- Check the exported file or actual playback path, especially if a streaming app may apply its own normalization.
Troubleshoot level jumps
One clip still sounds louder after matching
Measured loudness does not always correspond to the ambience you intend. Use clip gain to make a small subjective correction while keeping the chosen contrast between distant and close sounds.

Stereo image changes after normalization
Check whether left and right channels were normalized independently. If the stereo balance was intentional, use paired-channel normalization; independent channel processing is for fixing an existing imbalance.
The exported playlist differs from the edit
Confirm whether the playback app or device applies loudness normalization. Spotify notes that its web player and some third-party devices do not use it, so results may differ by playback route.

Peaks distort even though loudness is matched
Review true peak separately from integrated LUFS. A loudness target alone does not guarantee that peaks are safe, and encoding can introduce additional distortion.
