RetroSpace gives a space janitor a sprawling, interconnected ship to explore and several ways to tackle its dangers. Its stealth, hacking, mutations, traps and environmental tricks fit the immersive-sim tradition—but an early review found many of those ideas familiar from System Shock, BioShock and Prey. The game’s scale and flexibility set the stage; whether its tools make a distinctive impression is a separate question.
What is RetroSpace?
RetroSpace is a single-player first-person sci-fi action-adventure with immersive-sim and horror elements, developed by The Wild Gentlemen and published by Kwalee. Steam lists its release date as October 1, 2026. You play a janitor aboard Aurora 5, a city-ship in the AURORA fleet, after it is pulled into a black hole. The official premise places the story in 2177 and describes the station as shifting between two time periods. The developers call its mix of 1970s style, humor and horror “disco-punk space horror.”
The janitor perspective gives the setup a different flavor from the usual soldier-or-special-agent sci-fi hero, but the central appeal is familiar to immersive-sim fans: a dangerous place to explore, interconnected systems to manipulate, and choices about how to get past obstacles. That is the developers’ design pitch, not proof that every improvised plan works as intended.
What tools can you use in RetroSpace?
The official descriptions present Aurora 5 as a large, interconnected station with a central hub, shortcuts and secret routes. They advertise multiple ways to handle obstacles: avoid enemies through stealth, hack or manipulate systems, create diversions, set traps, exploit environmental hazards, search for hidden routes, or fight directly. The intended appeal is not simply a large arsenal; it is the chance to use the station and its systems as part of a solution.

Mutamods change your abilities
Mutamods grant abilities for stealth, combat, exploration and mobility, and the developers say they can be combined into different builds. In a November 13, 2025, Game Informer interview, creative director Bánk B. Varga described them as abilities derived from animal genes. He said players could rely on gadgets, mutations, both, or neither. The official descriptions also warn that mutations may come with side effects, so building around an ability may involve a trade-off rather than a straightforward upgrade.
Death is part of the loop
When the protagonist dies, the station clones them. That brings a consequence to manage and lost gear to recover, rather than treating death as a simple reset. Varga told Game Informer that cloning errors can be cleared by extracting genetic material from the previous body. This is a distinctive fit for the setting, though it also makes recovery and adaptation part of the challenge.

Is RetroSpace like System Shock?
There is a real connection, not just a superficial comparison. Varga named Thief, System Shock, Deus Ex and Prey among the games the team admired; Game Informer also identifies BioShock as an inspiration. He described the aim as giving players room to think through systems and find creative solutions. RetroSpace is not presented as a System Shock sequel; it is working in a tradition those games helped define.
The less flattering question is whether its tools feel too much like that tradition. A review under the supplied title says many ideas feel familiar from System Shock, BioShock and Arkane’s Prey, and singles out Prey’s Mimic ability as an example of the kind of memorable tool it hoped to see. That is an early critical impression, not a final verdict: the review’s writer said they had not completed a full review. Its concern is nevertheless useful: a large playground and many possible approaches do not automatically make the tools themselves distinctive.

What will show whether the tools stand out?
Look beyond the number of advertised options. The meaningful test is whether the options create different, workable approaches and whether the game makes experimentation rewarding. These are the questions that separate a convincing immersive sim from a list of familiar genre features:
- Different solutions: Do stealth, hacking, diversions and combat meaningfully change how an obstacle plays out, or do they lead to much the same result?
- System interplay: Can gadgets, Mutamods and station hazards combine in useful ways, rather than functioning as separate tools?
- Exploration: Do shortcuts, secrets and hidden routes reward curiosity with useful discoveries?
- Clarity: Does the game communicate objectives well enough to keep experimentation purposeful without spelling out every move?
- Distinctiveness: Do Mutamods or other tools create moments that feel specific to RetroSpace, rather than echoes of genre predecessors?
- Execution: Do controls and performance let you carry out the experiments the design invites?
Varga said the main story is mostly fixed, with side missions and collectibles, while some stretches allow players to choose their order; he also cited eight endings. Those are developer-reported design details from the 2025 interview, not an independent assessment of how much the paths differ in play.

Is RetroSpace worth playing on PS5?
A Duuro Plays review published September 30, 2026, of the PS5 version praised the explorable setting, atmosphere and interactive tools, but reported that the game rarely held 60 fps and that the reviewer encountered bugs. The reviewer disclosed receiving a PR-provided promo copy. Those performance observations apply to that PS5 review; they do not establish how the PC or Xbox Series versions perform. Duuro Plays said the game released October 1 on PS5, Xbox Series consoles and PC, with Switch 2 planned later.
On PS5, the available evidence points to an appealing setting and interactive ideas alongside reported frame-rate inconsistency and bugs. Whether that trade-off works for you depends on how much you value the atmosphere and exploration against a smooth, reliable experience. The review is one account, not a platform-wide performance measurement.
