1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEarly reports tied the backlash to launch-period performance problems and bugs, but the figures describe a short window—not the game’s current lifetime Steam rating. Tech4Gamers reported more than 2,000 negative reviews over three days, with complaints especially prominent among AMD graphics-card users. Other reports identified separate issues involving AMD rendering, NVIDIA Hairworks, and missing DLSS in one PC release. Those reports do not establish that every player encountered the same problems or that one fix resolved them all.
What the early Steam review reports actually say
Tech4Gamers reported that Steam had received over 2,000 negative reviews in the three days before its article. It described complaints about performance and bugs, particularly from players using AMD graphics cards, while noting that NVIDIA users had also raised complaints and that positive reviews continued to appear. The outlet characterized recent reviews as “Mostly Positive” at the time of publication. Tech4Gamers’ report is a dated secondary account, not an independently audited count.
PC Guide reported a different snapshot: more than 1,100 negative reviews on launch day, representing 32%, and a 35% negative share on September 30. These are separate time-specific measurements and should not be combined into one total. PC Guide’s launch coverage also described player reports of missing in-game models and black artifacts on Radeon hardware.
These numbers concern the launch reaction to the September 29, 2026 release, not the full history of reviews attached to The Witcher 3’s Steam listing. The available reporting does not establish that all negative reviews were off-topic, nor does it show that review sentiment alone proves the game was unplayable.

Which technical problems were reported?
AMD graphics: rendering problems and a driver update
PC Guide reported missing models and black artifacts on Radeon hardware at launch, and said a public driver was not immediately available. The outlet later reported that AMD Adrenalin Edition 26.9.2 became available a few hours after the game update went live. That sequence is a report about a specific launch window; it does not establish that the driver fixed every AMD user’s issue.
NVIDIA Hairworks: a separate performance concern
On September 30, CD PROJEKT RED advised players to disable Hairworks temporarily because of a performance issue. GamesRadar reproduced the developer’s statement: “We’ve identified an issue related to NVIDIA Hairworks that may significantly affect performance. We recommend disabling that setting until this is addressed in a patch.” GamesRadar’s report describes a separate issue from the Radeon rendering reports; it should not be treated as the same fault or fix.

Xbox Play Anywhere PC: missing DLSS and lighting complaints
Windows Central reported that Patch 5.00b restored unavailable DLSS in the Xbox Play Anywhere PC release and made lighting and parity adjustments, including changes related to overly dark interiors. The same coverage said CD PROJEKT RED planned another hotfix for an issue preventing some users from saving game files. In its October 1 update, Windows Central also reported glitchy lighting and poor performance in its check on one Xbox Ally X. That is a device-specific report, not a platform-wide benchmark. Windows Central’s coverage does not establish that Patch 5.00b resolved every reported problem.
What Remastered changes—and who gets the upgrade
CD PROJEKT RED announced the release for September 29, 2026, describing it as a free upgrade for eligible owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, as well as owners of the original Nintendo Switch version upgrading on Nintendo Switch 2. The publisher also lists the game for purchase on Battle.net and the Microsoft Store as an Xbox Play Anywhere title. Eligibility depends on the platform and the player’s existing ownership, so check the relevant store account before buying another copy.

The publisher says the release includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, including for owners who previously had only the base game. Its announced changes include enhanced environment, NPC, and monster textures; foliage and lighting updates; ray tracing and PC path tracing; PS5 Pro support; a reworked skill tree, combat animations and finishers; traversal and interface changes; cross-platform mod support; and Nintendo Switch 2 control features. These are publisher-described features, not independent performance-test findings. CD PROJEKT RED’s release announcement has the platform and upgrade details.
CD PROJEKT RED has also said that Remastered grew out of work on the planned Songs of the Past expansion: while developing it, the team identified parts of the base game it wanted to upgrade, and the work expanded into a full game upgrade. The company said Songs of the Past was planned for 2027. The announcement explains that development background.

Are the performance issues fixed?
The launch-period coverage documents targeted responses, not a universal resolution. AMD’s cited driver became available after release; the Hairworks guidance was to disable that setting until a patch addressed it; and Patch 5.00b covered named Xbox Play Anywhere PC issues. Windows Central’s October 1 update still described problems on one device. The cited reports do not verify the status of patches released after October 1, 2026, so they cannot establish the game’s current stability.
If you are troubleshooting, first identify your platform and the exact symptom rather than assuming reports from another version apply to yours. For the reported Hairworks performance issue, CD PROJEKT RED’s temporary recommendation was to disable Hairworks. If you see missing models or artifacts on Radeon hardware, check AMD’s driver availability and the game’s current patch information; the cited reporting does not guarantee a particular fix. For missing DLSS on the Xbox Play Anywhere PC build, the reported fix was Patch 5.00b. Problems with saves or lighting should be checked against current developer updates, because the launch coverage does not confirm their later status.

How to read the “review-bombing” headline
“Thousands” is supportable as an attributed description of the early reaction: Tech4Gamers reported over 2,000 negative reviews across three days. It is not a current count, a lifetime rating, or proof that every review concerned the same version or issue. PC Guide’s launch-day and September 30 percentages are distinct snapshots, while the game listing’s longer-term review history includes periods of off-topic activity. The clearest conclusion is narrower: the September 2026 release drew a substantial burst of negative Steam feedback amid reported technical problems, and the available evidence does not justify treating that short-lived reception as a settled verdict on every platform or on the game’s long-term Steam sentiment.
