McDonald’s says AI does not set or change menu prices. The company describes its pricing portal as a tool that gives restaurant-specific recommendations, with franchisees making the final pricing decisions. Reuters, however, reported that the system analyzes transactions and competitor prices to recommend prices—and that some franchisees felt pressure to use it. That distinction matters: a recommendation is not an automated final price, and the reported price differences between nearby restaurants do not prove the tool caused them.
What McDonald’s says its pricing tool does
In an October 1, 2026 statement, McDonald’s said, “AI does not set the price of a Big Mac or any other menu item. It does not change prices. And it does not determine what an individual customer pays.” The company also said it does not use dynamic pricing, does not adjust prices in real time or by time of day, and does not use an individual customer’s willingness to pay to determine a price. McDonald’s official statement says the tool focuses on restaurant-level market dynamics, including location and other local conditions.
The company describes the portal as a source of information, not an automatic pricing mechanism: “The bottom line: The tool provides information. People make the final pricing decisions.” McDonald’s says franchisees independently set menu prices and are not required to accept the portal’s recommendations. It points to local costs, customer demand, competition, and economic conditions as factors that have long informed pricing.
What Reuters reported about the recommendations
A September 29, 2026 Reuters investigation described a pricing engine that uses machine-learning algorithms to analyze data from millions of daily transactions across nearly 14,000 U.S. restaurants and generate what the company calls an “optimal price” for menu items at each location. Reuters said it reviewed screenshots of the pricing interface and interviewed nine people with first-hand knowledge of the company’s strategy. Its account described competitor-price information and restaurant-level “customer willingness to pay” indicators.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That reporting describes recommendations informed by restaurant-level data; it does not establish that the system automatically sets a customer’s price. The company’s denial concerns individual-level pricing and automated price changes, while Reuters’ reporting concerns the information and indicators used to generate location-level recommendations. The cited material does not independently establish the model’s exact variables, their weighting, or how strongly its recommendations affect final prices.
Why nearby McDonald’s prices can differ
Reuters checked the McDonald’s app in September 2026 and found a Big Mac listed for $5.69 at one company-run Fresno restaurant and $6.89 at another roughly two miles away—a reported difference of 21%. Reuters said it could not determine whether the pricing tool’s recommendations caused the gap or whether other factors did. The comparison shows that prices can differ between nearby restaurants; it is not evidence, by itself, that AI set either price.

McDonald’s says its more than 46,000 restaurants operate in markets where conditions can vary even between locations only a few miles apart. That is the company’s explanation for local pricing differences, not an independent verification of how its internal model works.
Do franchisees have to follow the tool?
McDonald’s says franchisees are free to reject recommendations and set final prices themselves. Reuters reported a more complicated picture: five franchise owners described pressure to use the tools, and the outlet cited a January internal communication requiring franchisees to be “constructively engaging with McDonald’s approved Pricing Consultant and Tools.” Former store owner Karen King told Reuters, “You don’t really have much of a choice anymore.” Reuters reported that McDonald’s did not address her specific claim.

Those accounts raise a distinction between formal authority and perceived pressure. The company says the portal does not mandate a price; the franchisee accounts reported by Reuters suggest some owners felt pressure to engage with the pricing tools. The reporting does not establish that the AI system itself sets final prices, nor that every franchisee experiences the same pressure.
Is this the same as McDonald’s other AI initiatives?
No. McDonald’s September 23, 2026 NEXT strategy announcement separately described ArchIQ, a generative-AI restaurant-efficiency initiative. The announcement does not identify ArchIQ as the pricing recommendation portal, so the two should not be treated as the same system.

So, is McDonald’s using AI to set menu prices?
It depends on what “set” means. McDonald’s says AI does not choose or change the final price a customer pays; franchisees decide prices. Reuters reports that a machine-learning pricing engine produces restaurant-level recommendations and that some franchisees felt pressure to use the tools. Based on the cited accounts, it is accurate to say McDonald’s uses algorithmic pricing recommendations. It is not established that AI automatically sets individual customers’ prices, or that the reported Fresno price difference was caused by the tool.
