Meta’s fuzzy Muse mascot, Jolly, is supposed to make an AI assistant feel more personable. To me, it looks like a children’s toy grafted onto software that can act on real tasks—and that mismatch makes the design hard to warm to. The “cursed void” in the headline is comic exaggeration, not a literal threat.
What Jolly is—and why Meta gave Muse a face
Meta introduced Muse on 8 September 2026 as a personal AI agent designed to work toward users’ goals, including taking actions and handling tasks in the background. Meta said it was rolling out in the United States on iOS, Android and the web, with interaction through WhatsApp also described. That makes Muse more than a chatbot that simply replies to prompts: the product is presented as something users can delegate work to. Meta’s Muse announcement describes its intended role.
The default fuzzy character is called Jolly in PC Gamer and WIRED; Axios uses the name Jollybot. Those are naming variations for the same mascot, not evidence of separate characters. Meta’s design explanation is that an avatar can make an ongoing conversation feel less awkward than talking to a logo. Product design lead Mona Sarantakos said, “it felt very odd talking to a corporate logo or entity.” Meta also says users can create, name and style their own Muse avatars, so Jolly is the default brand face, not the only look available. Meta’s design account explains that rationale.
Why the cute look can feel wrong for an AI agent
Jolly’s soft, rounded appearance signals friendliness and harmlessness. That is precisely where the uneasy reaction comes from: the presentation suggests a plush companion, while Muse is framed as an agent that may do things on a person’s behalf. Asking an assistant to shop, book travel or otherwise act for you is a different kind of trust decision from asking a chatbot a question.

Meta’s rationale is one interpretation of the design, not proof that every user will find it reassuring. Axios reports that Muse product design lead Alex Cornell designed the mascot and interprets it as a way to make increasingly capable agentic AI less intimidating. PC Gamer quotes System1 chief growth officer Andrew Tindall describing the use of cute, infant-like features as a way to make new technology easier to accept. VaynerX CMO Avery Akkineni gives the more favorable reading: “In some ways, it does humanize the product a little bit.” Those are competing interpretations of the same visual language, not measured evidence of how users respond.
Adults-only software, toy-like visual cues
WIRED framed the tension in its headline, “Meta’s Muse Is Adults-Only. Why Does It Look Like a Kids’ Toy?” Its report says Muse is restricted to adults and quotes Fairplay executive director Josh Golin: “It’s so clearly a character that would appeal to very young children.” Harvard marketing professor Julian De Freitas says cuteness can make a product seem warm and less threatening. These are commentators’ judgments about the look and its possible effect; they do not establish that Meta designed Jolly to target children, or that children are using Muse.

For me, the mismatch is the point: Jolly looks engineered for mass-market cuteness, while the assistant’s stated ambitions ask for serious trust. The default character’s blank, fuzzy friendliness does not automatically make a delegated action feel safer. It can instead make the product feel like it is borrowing the emotional cues of a toy for software that deserves careful scrutiny.
What the online reaction does—and does not—show
Tom’s Guide reported more than 400 comments on its Instagram post announcing the Muse Charm. In its review of those comments, the outlet identified “Surveillance Tamagotchi” as the most-liked reply, with 537 likes; it also noted positive reactions. Those figures describe one outlet’s post and comment review, reported on 28 September 2026. They are not a representative poll and cannot establish whether people generally like or dislike Jolly. Tom’s Guide’s report captures the split in that particular discussion.

Jolly is not the only way to use Muse
Meta says people can make, name and style their own avatars. That distinction matters: criticism of Jolly’s default look is not necessarily criticism of every possible Muse avatar, nor does customization settle whether an agentic assistant needs a mascot at all. The central design question remains whether a friendly character makes the product more approachable—or makes its real capabilities easier to underestimate.
The Muse Charm has also been described in coverage as a Tamagotchi-like wearable giving Muse a physical presence. That association makes the mascot’s toy-like quality even more conspicuous, but the available reporting does not establish an Amazon listing, price, release availability or purchase eligibility. The Charm is not necessary to explain the reaction to Jolly, and there is no basis here for treating it as a product recommendation.
