The result is a top-down twin-stick shooter with branching, tool-gated paths rather than a straight run of combat arenas.
What is End of Abyss about?
You play as Cel, a young combat technician sent to investigate disturbances in a sprawling underground facility. Its machinery and abandoned spaces are part of the danger, alongside the monstrous creatures moving through it. The setting is deliberately worn and uneasy: Section 9 Interactive co-founder Marcus Ottvall said the atmosphere and art draw on the films, games, comics and anime the team grew up with in his September 30, 2026 Xbox Wire article.
That decaying-world premise is more than a backdrop. The complex’s branching corridors, locked doors and hidden areas shape how Cel moves through it, while the threat of combat makes each excursion a matter of preparation as well as navigation.
Is End of Abyss a twin-stick shooter or a Metroidvania?
It combines both, with survival-horror framing. Cel moves with one stick and aims independently with the other, giving combat the familiar twin-stick setup. Exploration adds a Metroidvania-style structure: tools and upgrades open routes, shortcuts and secrets that were inaccessible earlier, encouraging trips back through known areas.

Section 9 co-founder Marcus Ottvall described the intended balance as approachable combat paired with exploration and progression: “We always wanted the game to have relatively simple combat so that the game would be easy to pick up and play, but with a Metroidvania aspect that would let you find new weapons and equipment to power up your character and unlock and explore intertwining areas.”
Combat and resource management
Xbox Wire’s June 19, 2026 hands-on with a demo described dodging, limited-use healing, an unlimited-use energy pistol, a limited-ammo shotgun, flares and grenades. The demo also included crafting materials, equipment crafting and permanent upgrades. These are details from a preview build, not a complete account of every weapon or system in the released game.

The mix points toward combat that rewards managing what Cel has available rather than simply firing without pause. Readers looking for deliberate exploration and a survival-horror feel may find that combination appealing; those who want constant, uncomplicated shooting may be less drawn to the slower, atmospheric direction the studio describes.
Tools, maps and returning to old routes
The Scanner helps Cel identify hidden areas and make sense of branching paths. In the June demo, scanning could mark map information, while keys and shortcuts helped connect parts of the facility. As Cel gains tools and equipment, routes that were previously out of reach can become accessible, creating reasons to revisit earlier corridors.

Mattias Otvall, a Section 9 co-founder, described the Scanner as “a tool that we created for making the exploration more manageable and enjoyable.” It is a navigation aid within a game that expects players to explore, not a substitute for learning how the facility fits together.
What platforms is End of Abyss on?
The game launched October 1, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PlayStation listing gives the PS5 release date; Xbox Wire announced the Xbox Series X|S launch, and the Epic Games Store lists the PC version. Epic Games Publishing is the publisher, and Section 9 Interactive is the developer.

The game’s grim environments and monster design are central to its appeal, but the same low visibility can make exploration harder. In its October 1, 2026 review, GamesRadar praised the atmosphere and creature design while reporting that gloomy areas sometimes obscured levers and other objects.

The reviewer also described some boss fights as frustratingly difficult and reported bugs during an 18-hour playthrough, including enemies hitting through walls, an elevator loading problem and a soft lock near the end. Those are one reviewer’s findings on the version played; they are not a completion-time estimate or a guarantee of what other players will encounter, and later patches may change the experience.
