Modern Warfare 4 launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC on October 23, 2026. Digital Standard and Vault preorders unlock the campaign starting October 16, but that is not a week-early full-game launch. The game is not included with Game Pass at launch, and online multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential. Here’s what to choose, what to check, and what remains unconfirmed before launch.
Check your Xbox platform and release date
Activision lists Modern Warfare 4 for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC, with a release date of October 23, 2026. Xbox One is not listed as a supported platform on the official game page. Activision’s game page has the platform and date details.
If you buy through the Xbox storefront, Xbox Play Anywhere provides access on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC. Activision says an internet connection is required for that feature. A physical edition is available for Xbox Series X through select retailers; Xbox Series S does not have a disc drive.
Choose an edition and format

These edition details and upgrade rules are listed by Activision Support. Choose Vault for its listed digital extras; if you want the option to upgrade later, digital Standard preserves that route. Check the Xbox store or retailer for current pricing and checkout terms.

Know what preorder early access includes
A digital preorder of either Standard or Vault grants campaign access starting Friday, October 16, one week before the full release. It is campaign access, not the complete game launching early. Activision and Xbox caution that actual play time and platform availability can vary, so check the local Xbox listing close to October 16. Plan for Game Pass and internet access
Modern Warfare 4 is not included with Xbox Game Pass at launch. Xbox’s listing states: “Online Multiplayer requires a Game Pass Essential subscription (sold separately).” That requirement applies to online multiplayer; it is separate from buying the game.

Activision Support says texture streaming is used across all game modes and that a continuous internet connection is needed to play Multiplayer, including private matches, and DMZ. Plan for a reliable connection even if you intend to play a private match. Activision’s editions FAQ covers the connection requirement.
Check preload timing and storage near launch
The reviewed Xbox listing does not give a full-game Xbox preload start time or a total install size. It warns that mandatory updates may require additional storage, but does not establish a free-space target. Check the Xbox listing and official Call of Duty channels again near launch before clearing space or planning a download.

Do not use the PC preload window as an Xbox console schedule: Call of Duty’s PC announcement specifies October 15 at 9 AM PT for PC preload only. It does not establish when Xbox console preload begins or how much space the Xbox version needs. Call of Duty’s PC preload and tech announcement is explicitly about PC.
