The address was a decoy, not a real holiday rental. The stunt, reported by 1News, shows how a listing can look convincing enough to draw interest; it does not show that those applicants were defrauded.
New Zealand reports describe a more direct risk: fake listings that copied real homes and steered would-be guests toward private payment. The safest response is to pause if a booking suddenly changes course, keep payment and messages on the booking platform, and contact your bank or card provider quickly if you suspect you have sent money to a scammer.
What the Downing Street listing does—and doesn’t—show
The £55-a-night Downing Street listing was a deliberate test of online booking controls, not a genuine offer to stay at the UK prime minister’s official residence. 1News reported that 14 people applied during the 20-minute test. It is an illustration of how a seemingly plausible listing can attract applicants, not evidence that those people lost money.
For New Zealand travellers, the more useful warning comes from reported cases involving homes that actually exist. A scammer can copy a real property’s photos and description, then use the fake page to divert a guest’s money. A familiar-looking house or accurate photographs do not, by themselves, prove that the person taking a booking is authorized to rent it.

Mt Maunganui: copied property details and a private payment
The NZ Herald reported that a fake Booking.com listing copied details and images of a genuine Mt Maunganui property and directed a would-be guest to make a private payment. The Herald reported that one family lost nearly NZ$10,000 in that case. That figure relates to the family in this reported incident; it is not an estimate of typical losses.
Orewa: a homeowner said her house appeared without permission
RNZ reported that Orewa homeowner Kellie Walker said her six-bedroom house appeared on Booking.com even though she had not listed it. She told RNZ the page remained live for weeks after she reported it. This is her account of a specific case, rather than a measure of how frequently unauthorized listings occur or how quickly the platform handles reports generally.

The incidents are individual reports from 2024. They establish that owners and guests described these kinds of problems, but they do not establish a platform-wide failure rate or show that one booking website is safer than another.
Red flags in a booking conversation or payment request
Netsafe’s chief online safety officer, Sean Lyons, told 1News to be alert to requests that a guest “communicate with us off-platform” or “send us a link to another payment platform.” A message claiming that “the payment didn’t work” can be especially concerning if it is followed by a request to pay again through a different link or channel.

- A sudden change of channel: the host asks you to continue by email, messaging app or another service instead of using the booking platform.
- A new payment link: you are told to retry a failed payment using a link or payment service outside the original booking process.
- Pressure to act before checking: an unexpected change makes it difficult to verify who is asking for money or whether the booking remains attached to your reservation.
These signs are reasons to stop and verify, not proof on their own that a listing is fraudulent. Before proceeding, check the booking and messages in your platform account and independently verify the property or operator using contact details obtained from a trusted source. Do not rely on a number or link supplied in the unexpected payment request.
What to do if a booking changes unexpectedly
- Pause the transaction. Do not use a new payment link or move the conversation elsewhere while you check the request.
- Open the booking service directly. Sign in through the service’s app or by entering its address yourself, then check the reservation and any messages there.
- Verify independently. Use contact information you obtained separately for the property or operator to confirm the booking and payment instructions. This check can help identify a mismatch, but it cannot guarantee that a booking is legitimate.
- Keep communication and payment on-platform. If the request is genuine, the operator should be able to clarify it through the booking service’s established process. If it remains unclear, contact the platform through its own help channel before paying.
- If you have already paid, contact your bank or card provider promptly. Ask what steps are available for the payment you made, and report the suspected fraud to the booking service as well.
Why the payment method matters if money is sent
Lyons told 1News that trying to recover money tends to be harder after a wire transfer or cryptocurrency payment than after a bank or card payment. That is a difference in recovery difficulty, not a promise that a bank or card provider will refund a loss. Contact the provider as soon as possible and give it the transaction details; what it can do depends on the payment and circumstances.

What responsibility belongs to booking platforms?
Lyons argued that “It’s the industry that has the ability to see the patterns.” His point is that a platform can compare listing activity across its systems, while a traveller usually sees only the one booking in front of them. It is an argument about where preventive capacity may sit, not a formal finding about legal liability.
The reports also present different kinds of evidence: homeowners described unauthorized listings and delays in removal, while Booking.com described verification and investigation practices. Those accounts should be kept distinct. A few reported cases are not enough to calculate how common fake listings are, establish a platform-wide removal rate, or rank booking websites by safety.

Travel’s importance does not make every listing trustworthy
Stats NZ figures attributed in secondary coverage put total tourism expenditure at NZ$46.6 billion, international tourism spending at NZ$18.1 billion, and tourism employment at 327,888 people for the year ended March 2025. These figures describe tourism’s scale, not the prevalence of booking scams; they do not show how many listings are fake.
