As of October 2, 2026, the Yankees had not decided whether Aaron Judge would be on their 26-man roster for the ALDS against Tampa Bay. The team was assessing whether his strained right calf would allow him to contribute at some point in the best-of-five series; the available reports do not confirm the final roster decision.
What was known before the roster deadline
MLB reported on October 2 that the Yankees expected to make their decision late Friday. The Associated Press reported that the roster was due to MLB by 10 a.m. ET Saturday, October 3—about ten hours before Game 1. Those reports describe the decision window, not its outcome. What the Yankees were evaluating
Judge had not played since September 16. He took live batting practice Thursday and worked out Friday, but those activities alone did not establish that he was medically cleared or ready for games. Manager Aaron Boone described the question as whether Judge could be available as a player at some point in the series: “We’re looking at the days, and so, it’s more, ‘Is he going to be available at some point in this series potentially as a player?’” MLB.com · AP report
Right field and Tropicana Field’s turf
The AP reported that the venue’s artificial turf was part of the decision about whether Judge could return to right field. Boone said, “It plays into it a little bit.” That is a factor the manager acknowledged, not confirmation that Judge could or could not field. AP report

A possible hitting-only role
The AP said pinch hitting was a possible role if Judge could not play the outfield. It was reported as an option under consideration, not as an announced Yankees plan. Rays manager Kevin Cash said, “I expect him playing right field, hitting third,” and Game 1 starter Drew Rasmussen said, “I think we make the assumption he’s in there until he’s not.” Those comments conveyed Tampa Bay’s expectation; neither confirmed Judge’s activation or lineup spot. Judge’s season context
The AP’s October 2 report listed Judge with 66 games played, a .241 batting average, 18 home runs, 41 RBIs and a .871 OPS. These are season figures from that report, not a measure of his recovery or a projection of what he could do in the series. AP report

How the injury developed
MLB described Judge’s right calf injury as a moderate strain and reported that he was not on the Yankees’ Wild Card Series roster. The AP’s chronology said he had earlier been sidelined by a fractured rib, returned for seven games, and then strained his calf on September 16. The rib injury is background to his season, not the stated basis for the ALDS roster decision. MLB.com · AP report

The October 2 reports did not establish the final 26-man roster, medical clearance, a return-to-play protocol or what happened in Game 1. They also gave no sourced probability of Judge returning or estimate of how his availability would affect the Yankees’ series chances. The accurate answer at that reporting point was that his status remained undecided; a post-deadline roster status requires confirmation from a later authoritative report.
