Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp in Copenhagen after head coach Jorge Jesus publicly explained why he had not brought the forward on against Norway. Jesus said the decision was tactical and insisted that team selection was his responsibility. Ronaldo said he would explain his reasons for leaving “in due time”; as of the reports published on 30 September and 1 October 2026, his fuller account had not appeared.
Why did Cristiano Ronaldo leave Portugal’s training camp?
In a statement reported by Portugal’s public broadcaster RTP on 30 September 2026, Ronaldo said he left after Jesus’s press conference and a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença. He said he would explain his reasons later and wished Portugal and his teammates well. RTP’s headline quoted his words, “A seu tempo direi a verdade” (“In due time I will tell the truth”). That statement confirmed the departure but did not provide Ronaldo’s full explanation. The reports available on 1 October did not establish precisely what he was thinking or whether he considered the episode a reason to end his international career.
What happened between Ronaldo and Jorge Jesus?
The dispute followed Portugal’s 2–1 win over Norway. Jesus said he and Ronaldo had a verbal understanding that Ronaldo would not start but could come on for about 30 minutes if the match required it. Jesus said the match developed differently from what he had anticipated, so he changed his plan and left Ronaldo on the bench.

The private understanding is described through Jesus’s account; the available reporting does not independently verify the conversation. The Guardian reported that Ronaldo viewed being left unused after the discussion as humiliating, but that characterization was not a direct statement from Ronaldo in the coverage. The Guardian also reported that Ronaldo did not join his teammates in saluting supporters after the final whistle and that the disagreement escalated after Jesus discussed the benching publicly. Did Jorge Jesus leave Ronaldo on the bench against Norway?
Yes. Jesus said Ronaldo was not due to start, but could be used if needed. After judging the match differently from how he had expected, Jesus chose not to bring him on. He publicly defended his authority to make that call:

“I can promise whatever I want,” the 72-year-old said. “I’m the coach and I told the player that he wasn’t going to play. I told him I would take him to the bench and that, if I needed him for 30 minutes, he would play. But I saw the game differently, so he didn’t come on. It won’t be Cristiano, or any other player, who changes my ideas as a coach. Never. Neither him nor anyone else. Not even a president. Never. Zero.”
The Guardian also reported that Jesus intended to start Gonçalo Ramos rather than Ronaldo in the following Monday’s match. RTP reported Jesus saying there would be time to discuss Ronaldo, while the immediate focus was Denmark. Those remarks do not establish whether Ronaldo’s departure marks the end of his Portugal career.

Why is the walkout dividing opinion?
The disagreement can be read in two ways, neither of which the available reports prove to be Ronaldo’s full motive. One interpretation is that leaving was an understandable response if Ronaldo believed an understanding had been broken and the coach’s public comments added to the humiliation. The other is that Jesus was entitled to make a tactical decision, and that leaving camp was an unacceptable response to being benched.
The Guardian described a split in Portugal’s media and public commentary: some defended Ronaldo, while many newspapers and commentators criticized his conduct as selfish. It also noted that some media voices, particularly at outlets in which Ronaldo is a shareholder, criticized Jesus. O Jogo’s front page was reported to carry the message that Ronaldo had turned his back on the national team. These are descriptions of the debate, not evidence of a measured national consensus: the reports did not cite a representative poll or a reliable percentage for either view.
