He described that figure as “Like 30%” in a 2026 interview, and said the game had to keep working for players who chose to explore.
What did the players do?
After exiting the opening dungeon, some players did not follow the expected route toward Riverwood. They turned away into the wilderness to explore on their own. Nesmith called the behavior “quite staggering” and recalled the share as “Like 30% of players.”
The figure and description come from Nesmith’s interview with Grant Taylor-Hill for Insider Gaming, published October 3, 2026.
What does the 30% figure tell us?
It is an approximate number Nesmith recalled in conversation, not a fully documented player statistic. The interview does not identify the study, its sample or denominator, how players were counted, or which version or cohort it covered. It therefore supports the narrower point that the team studied this early choice and that Nesmith remembered a substantial share doing it—not a precise rate for every Skyrim player or edition.

Why did this matter to Skyrim’s design?
Nesmith said the game needed to keep functioning for players who left the expected route. In his account, freedom was a deliberate design priority, but accommodating it meant preparing quests and environments for different choices and outcomes.
He described the branching work this way: “Freedom was key and we had to work for that because there were a lot of cases where you realize if this happens it has to go this way, whereas if this happens it has to go another way, and if this happens you’ll have to take it this way, and so on.” He added that making quests and environments “work differently to accommodate that” required “a lot of effort.”

The anecdote captures a tension at the heart of open-world design: players may ignore the route a game appears to offer, so the world and its quests must account for choices outside that expected path. Nesmith’s specific example is the turn away from Riverwood; the interview does not provide further details about how the study was conducted or how the game handled each possible branch.
