Kansas quarterback Cole Ballard is progressing from a shoulder injury, but there is no stated return date. In an October 2, 2026 report, RotoWire said coach Lance Leipold was unsure how long Ballard would be out; “out indefinitely” describes that uncertainty, not a confirmed season-ending absence.

The latest dated update, from RotoWire on October 2, 2026, says Ballard is progressing but remains out for an undetermined period. RotoWire attributed the update to 247Sports reporter Michael Swain. It did not provide a date for Ballard’s return, and the exact underlying wording from Leipold was not independently available.
That report does not say Ballard is out for the season. It also does not establish whether he will be available for a particular upcoming game, so a game-day availability report is needed for a current designation.
What happened to Ballard’s shoulder?
KU Sports reported that Ballard appeared to hurt his shoulder during Kansas’s September 11 loss to Missouri. He was hit while releasing a short pass to quarterback Isaiah Marshall on a trick play, went to the locker room, and later returned to the sideline wearing a sling. This describes the reported sequence; the sources do not give a confirmed diagnosis or specific shoulder injury.

What did Kansas say before the Arizona State game?
On September 14, coach Lance Leipold said, “He didn’t practice today,” and added, “Hopefully he’ll be available, but I can’t say that at this time.” These comments concerned the lead-up to Kansas’s September 19 game against Arizona State, not Ballard’s October 2 status.
Kansas ultimately ruled Ballard out for the Arizona State game. KU Sports said he had been listed as doubtful on the Wednesday and Thursday availability reports. At that point, Rice transfer Chase Jenkins was set to back up Isaiah Marshall. Those are historical details and do not establish Kansas’s current quarterback depth chart.

What is known about Ballard’s season statistics?
RotoWire’s October 2 report said Ballard had completed 14 passes for 198 yards before the Week 2 game. Those figures provide context about his season to that point; they do not indicate when he will return.

- Check the date: A newer availability report can supersede the October 2 status.
- Distinguish status from diagnosis: “Progressing” and “out indefinitely” describe reported availability and uncertainty, not a medical diagnosis.
- Look for an actual game designation: Earlier doubtful or out listings apply to the game they name and should not be carried forward as a current designation.
