Magic: The Gathering | Star Trek is a forthcoming Universes Beyond set celebrating Star Trek’s 60th anniversary, with a global tabletop release scheduled for November 13, 2026. It brings characters and moments from across the franchise into Magic—and, according to principal game designer Gavin Verhey, uses mechanics built around exploration, gradual growth and difficult choices to address a central adaptation challenge: Star Trek is less focused on fighting than Magic is.
What is in the Magic: The Gathering Star Trek set?
The set draws on all 60 years of Star Trek, spanning television and film from The Original Series through later series and movies. Its physical product lineup includes Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, four Commander decks, bundles, Draft Night, Scene Boxes and Prerelease Packs. Wizards of the Coast lists November 13, 2026 as the global tabletop release date. Wizards’ product overview has the announced formats and contents; StarTrek.com’s announcement frames the release as a tribute to six decades of the franchise.
The set is also designed to evoke more than familiar faces on cards. Verhey, the Wizards principal game designer who led the project, told Wargamer that exploration and dilemmas posed a different design problem from Magic’s usual emphasis on combat. Mechanics discussed in the interview aim to make building toward a later payoff, exploring a range of worlds and making choices central to play.
How the designers adapted Star Trek for Magic
Verhey began work on the set in 2022, he told GamesMarket in an interview published September 2, 2026. At Gamescom 2026, he described a franchise where recognizable characters and iconic moments translate readily, but where exploration and moral dilemmas are more prominent than fighting. Magic, by contrast, commonly represents conflict through attacking creatures and removing opponents’ creatures.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
“The trick is that Star Trek is a lot more about dilemmas and exploration, and a lot less about fighting. Fighting does happen – you have your starships shooting at each other and quarrels down on the land, don’t get me wrong – but Magic is a game about attacking for two and removing your opponents creatures, so how do we make that work in a Star Trek setting?”
That is Verhey’s explanation to Wargamer of the adaptation challenge. The mechanics he discussed suggest a slower build toward endgame features rather than a set that relies on the license as surface decoration.
Spacecraft power up over time
Verhey said Spacecraft are “slow and power up over time.” The gradual build reflects the set’s broader emphasis on development and payoff. The interview does not establish exact card rules, so consult the printed card text for how any particular Spacecraft works.

Strange New Worlds rewards different lands
The Strange New Worlds mechanic counts differently named lands a player controls. It encourages players to gather a broader spread of worlds and supports longer games, connecting exploration with the choices involved in building a mana base.
Dilemmas make choices matter
Dilemmas put modal decisions—the choice among different options—at the center of play. Verhey pointed to Seven of Nine as an example: her card draws when its controller faces a dilemma, representing her drive to gather information. The interview describes the design intent; the specific options and effects depend on each card’s text.
Tribbles bring a familiar episode into the set
Verhey confirmed that Tribbles appear. Their rapid multiplication calls back to “The Trouble With Tribbles,” the original-series episode. That reference sits alongside the set’s larger effort to turn recognizable Star Trek ideas into playable mechanics.

What collectors should know about special cards
Wizards says seven signed headliner cards are randomly inserted into Collector Boosters, with approximately 250 copies of each. Each is signed by the actor who portrayed the depicted character. The cards can appear only in Collector Boosters; if one is found in a Collector Booster of another language, the card itself is English. The quantity is an approximate figure supplied by Wizards, not an independently audited count.
The set also has 30 stardates cards. Nonfoil versions appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters; traditional foil versions appear only in Collector Boosters. For the full product and card-treatment details, see Wizards’ overview.
Legality and release details
Wizards says the main TRK set is legal in all formats. TRC Commander-product cards and SDS stardates cards are legal in Commander, Legacy and Vintage; individual cards may also be legal in other formats where those cards are already available. Set-specific Draft and Sealed play uses cards opened from Play Boosters. Check the legality of an individual card and the applicable format rules before using it in a deck.

The announced global tabletop date is November 13, 2026. Product availability and preorder listings can vary by retailer, and Wizards’ listed MSRP does not establish current stock or sale price. Its overview also notes that Beginner Box details were removed because that product was canceled; older announcements that still list a Beginner Box are out of date.
A Star Trek anniversary release, not a separate history book
The Magic set is one part of Star Trek’s 60th-anniversary context, not a general franchise reference. StarTrek.com’s anniversary guide separately lists Star Trek Timelines, a DK Publishing book due November 17, 2026; that book is not part of the Magic release. The same guide reports more than 50 million Magic players globally and more than 17 million registered Magic Arena players worldwide, but does not state a measurement date or methodology for either figure.
