The Chicago White Sox named rookie left-hander Hagen Smith their opener for Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The assignment is not a promise that Smith will pitch a conventional starter’s workload: Chicago expects to use bullpen help, but has not announced a fixed innings plan for him.
What Smith’s opener assignment means
White Sox manager Will Venable announced the choice Friday, October 2. Calling Smith the opener distinguishes his role from that of a conventional starter expected to cover several innings; it does not specify how long he will pitch. Chicago’s bullpen deployment is therefore central to the Game 1 plan, though the team has not set out a precise sequence or workload.
A best-of-five series includes off-days that can give clubs more opportunities to use relievers aggressively. That schedule creates flexibility, not certainty about which pitchers Chicago will use or when.
Why Chicago chose Smith
Smith had just worked three scoreless innings against Houston in the Wild Card Series. He allowed two hits and struck out one before Jordan Hicks relieved him. That recent outing gives Chicago a fresh postseason example of Smith handling an opening assignment, but it does not establish how many innings he will pitch against Cleveland.

MLB.com reported that Smith recorded a 1.29 ERA in 18 regular-season appearances, including one start. The University of Arkansas listed his 2026 line as 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 28.0 innings. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Arkansas and made his MLB debut after an August callup in 2026.
How Smith has fared against Cleveland
Smith faced the Guardians three times during the regular season, allowing two earned runs on two hits over a combined 5 2/3 innings, according to MLB.com. Those limited appearances are relevant context, but they do not determine how the matchup will unfold in a postseason game.

Field Level Media reported that Chicago went 7-6 against Cleveland in the regular season. That record describes the clubs’ previous meetings; it is not a forecast for the Division Series.
Cleveland’s Game 1 pitching plan
A Field Level Media preview listed left-hander Parker Messick as Cleveland’s opposing Game 1 pitcher. That gives the opener matchup a different shape from a standard duel between two expected long-outing starters: Smith is assigned to open for Chicago, while the Guardians’ planned starter is Messick. The available announcement does not establish a comparable inning-by-inning bullpen plan for either club.

Smith’s reaction to the assignment
After the announcement, Smith told MLB.com: “It’s cool. Obviously want to go out there and do the best I can for the team and just realizing it’s just baseball at the end of the day,” Smith said Friday. “Like, go to the Houston outing; after that first pitch, I was pretty anxious to get out there and throw the first pitch. And then after it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s just baseball.’”
