MLB’s 2026 ABS system did not replace the home-plate umpire with a robot: the umpire made the initial ball-or-strike call, and an eligible player could ask the camera-tracking system to review it. Of 10,557 challenges during the season, 5,686 overturned the call—a 54% challenge success rate, not a claim that 54% of all pitches were called incorrectly.
How MLB’s “robot umpire” challenges work
MLB adopted the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System for all 2026 Spring Training, Championship Season and Postseason games. The home-plate umpire still calls each pitch. Immediately after a call, the batter, pitcher or catcher may signal a challenge; coaches and other teammates cannot initiate one or advise the player to do so. MLB’s announcement of the 2026 format describes the system as a challenge option rather than automated calling on every pitch.
What happens after a challenge

The home-plate umpire announces the ruling, with the result shown on the stadium scoreboard and broadcast graphics. MLB said the process takes approximately 15 seconds.
A team begins with two challenges. A successful challenge is retained; an unsuccessful one uses up a challenge. If a team enters an extra inning with none remaining, it receives a fresh challenge.
How ABS defines the strike zone
The zone is individualized according to the batter’s measured height. MLB defines a 17-inch-wide rectangle whose top is 53.5% of the player’s height and whose bottom is 27%. The pitch’s position is assessed as it passes the middle of home plate. If any part of the ball touches any part of that zone, the system rules it a strike.

What the 54% season rate means
Associated Press season-end figures published October 2, 2026, put the total at 5,686 overturned calls out of 10,557 challenges, or 54%. The percentage is the share of challenged calls that changed—not the share of pitches, umpire calls or games affected. AP also reported an average of 4.35 challenges per game.
A separate Baseball Savant / MLB ABS Challenge Dashboard snapshot accessed October 3, 2026 showed 8,446 attempts: 4,525 overturned and 3,921 confirmed, also a 54% rate. The dashboard is live and its displayed totals were lower than AP’s later season-end count. The two counts reflect different snapshots and should not be combined.
Who challenged successfully—and how often
In AP’s season-end account, catchers had the highest success rate among eligible players, while pitchers had the lowest. Success rate and number of challenges are separate measures: a role or player can have a high rate without making the most challenges.

AP also reported that Reds catcher William Contreras made 185 challenges and won 105. J.T. Realmuto succeeded on 81% of his challenges among catchers with at least 75 challenges, while Tyler Stephenson’s rate was 68% among the named qualifying catcher group. These individual examples have different volumes and, for the catcher success-rate comparisons, a minimum-attempt threshold; they are not directly interchangeable rankings.
How challenge use changed over the season and by inning
Challenges became more frequent as the season progressed. AP reported 3.76 per game in March, 4.60 in August and 4.61 in September. That describes usage, not whether players became more accurate at choosing every challenge.

The figures show that ninth-inning appeals were common but less successful than challenges in the first three innings. They do not establish that a particular timing strategy caused the difference. AP reported that teams were more cautious early because two unsuccessful challenges exhaust their allowance, and that the ninth inning produced the most challenges despite its lower success rate.

Why deciding quickly is part of the skill
A player has to recognize the pitch and decide immediately whether the call is worth contesting. Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it “a new muscle for players to learn.” Atlanta manager Walt Weiss cautioned against saving challenges mechanically for high-leverage moments: “You start talking about saving it for certain situations, it probably doesn’t end well. My message was the lower the leverage, the more certainty you have to have.” That is Weiss’s approach, not a league-wide rule or proven formula.
Houston manager Joe Espada said, “ABS has really impacted the game,” describing lineups as more selective and disciplined and pitchers as being pushed to attack the strike zone more. These are managers’ observations about the system’s effects, not evidence that a particular tactical change caused the season’s overturn rates.

AP reported that Cincinnati had a 62% challenge success rate and a net gain of 16.8 in run value from overturns; Cleveland was reported at minus-13.4 runs. AP attributed the run-value calculations to Baseball Savant. Those estimates describe the value assigned to overturned calls, not wins or a complete measure of team performance.

The format also produced a postseason first: according to AP, Realmuto’s successful challenge ended Game 2 of the Phillies’ 2026 NL Wild Card Series, the first game-ending ABS challenge in postseason history. MLB had announced that the challenge format would apply in 2026 postseason games.
Why MLB chose challenges instead of automated calls on every pitch
MLB said the format reflected players’ strong preference for challenges over using ABS to call every pitch. Commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. said that preference was “a key factor” in the decision. The league presented the design as a way to correct disputed calls while preserving the umpire’s initial role and the pace of play; that is MLB’s stated rationale, not an independent finding that the system has no effect on game flow.
