Coach Paul Maurice said Barkov would be evaluated the next day; no diagnosis or return timetable was available in the postgame report.
What happened to Barkov against the Sharks?
Barkov went down at 8:07 of the second period while battling for the puck in the right corner during a Florida power play, then left for the dressing room. The Panthers’ recap described his left leg bending awkwardly. The Associated Press account said his left knee appeared to buckle, but that was an on-ice observation, not a confirmed diagnosis.
San Jose went on to win 4-3 in overtime. NHL.com’s game report, the Panthers’ official recap and the Associated Press report distributed by FOX Sports describe the incident and its immediate aftermath.
What did the Panthers say about his injury?
After the game, Maurice said, “He’ll get looked at tomorrow.” He also said, “It’s not related to his injury last year at all. We will have a good idea by tomorrow afternoon.” His remarks indicated that an evaluation was planned and that the team expected more clarity; they did not provide a diagnosis or confirm a recovery timeline.

How is this different from Barkov’s previous injury?
Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after injuring his right knee on the first day of training camp. NHL.com reported that he had surgery the following day to repair his ACL and MCL. The incident against San Jose was described as involving his left leg, and Maurice explicitly said it was unrelated to that earlier right-knee injury.
