You’re here to win games, and we didn’t do that.” The Phillies were eliminated, and Harper offered no excuse for the result.
What happened in Game 3?
The Phillies forced a deciding game by hitting three solo home runs late in Game 2. But Atlanta took control early in the finale: Michael Harris II hit a three-run homer off Aaron Nola in the first inning. The Braves won 6-2 and advanced; Philadelphia’s season ended.
Harper’s words were direct: the team’s job was to win, and it had failed to do so. He did not single out a teammate or name one cause for the loss. The Associated Press report by Bill Trocchi, published by The Washington Post on October 2, 2026, says Harper offered no excuses for the circumstances surrounding Philadelphia’s playoff qualification and pitching setup.
How did the late playoff qualification affect the series?
Philadelphia did not clinch a postseason place until the final game of the regular season, following a September swoon. That late entry limited the team’s ability to arrange its pitching for the Atlanta series as it might have preferred.

Interim manager Don Mattingly described the push to qualify this way: “But that’s not the way it went. We had to fight to get ourselves in, and to do what we had to do to get in, we had to do what we had to do basically every game in the series.” His comment provides context for the difficult route into October, rather than an excuse for the Game 3 defeat.
Why was this exit described as another step backward?
The AP report characterized the elimination as the fifth consecutive postseason exit for a Phillies core that includes Harper, Kyle Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, Zack Wheeler and Nola. It reported that the group averaged 91 wins per year across its five straight playoff appearances. Those figures are as reported by the AP, not independently recalculated here.

The AP report framed the pursuit as an effort to win Philadelphia’s first World Series title since 2008. The 2026 loss therefore ended not just another playoff run, but one that stopped earlier than the team’s previous four postseason finishes in this stretch.

What did Aaron Nola say about the team’s potential?
Nola pointed to the gap between the players’ ability and the outcome: “We know what type of guys are in here. We know what type of players we have, and what we’re capable of. (We need to) kind of play good at the right time.” His remarks, like Harper’s, addressed the team collectively rather than assigning blame to one player.
