Columbus erased an early deficit with three first-period goals in less than six minutes, then converted twice on the power play and killed all five Buffalo advantages.
How Columbus turned an early deficit into a first-period lead
Buffalo went ahead 1-0 before Columbus responded with three goals in a 5:53 stretch late in the first period. Knies put the Blue Jackets in front 2-1 at 17:58, finishing a Charlie Coyle pass with a power-play one-timer from the slot. Columbus ended the period up 3-1.
The Sabres’ goals came from Mattias Samuelsson, Jack Quinn and Konsta Helenius. The NHL’s game recap details the scoring sequence; Buffalo’s recap also confirms the final score and the first-period swing.
Knies made an immediate impact in his Blue Jackets debut
Acquired from Toronto earlier in the week, Knies finished his first game for Columbus with two goals and an assist. His second goal came at 7:45 of the second period, making it 4-2 after Columbus killed a Buffalo two-man advantage. The NHL recap quotes Knies describing the moment: “That’s a lot of luck,” while also crediting teammates with helping him feel comfortable.
