Jaylen Brown is still learning the Philadelphia 76ers’ defensive calls after moving from Boston. The adjustment is about more than memorizing new terms: Brown says familiar words can point to different coverages in Philadelphia, so he has to identify the right call and communicate it clearly with teammates.
What Brown is learning about Philadelphia’s defense
In an October 1, 2026 report, The Philadelphia Inquirer’s Chris Hine described Brown’s adjustment as underway. Brown said Boston and Philadelphia sometimes use the same terminology for different defensive coverages. As he put it, “Some of the terminology, they use the same words, but it’s a whole different coverage.”
That makes the transition a matter of translating a call into the correct assignment—not merely learning a fresh vocabulary list. Brown said he needs to make sure he is calling the right coverage and that teammates understand their responsibilities, including coming out of timeouts and huddles.
Why communication is a camp priority
Brown named clear communication, recognizing coverages, holding one another accountable, and getting back on defense as areas the team is working on. “It’s just a whole new system, whole new calls,” he said. “I gotta like, download my brain to a different algorithm to make sure I’m not calling the wrong stuff. Because the names are different.”

Philadelphia began training camp with defense as the initial emphasis. Hine reported that coach Nick Nurse spent the first two days installing defensive concepts; later in the week, the team began working on some offensive sets and out-of-bounds plays. Brown said he was less concerned about offense because of the team’s talent, while stressing the need to get the defensive communication right.
What Nurse sees in the roster—and what remains to be done
In a separate October 3, 2026 report, Hine wrote that Nurse believes the roster could let him use more of his defensive playbook. Nurse pointed to the team’s depth, size, athleticism, experience, and basketball IQ as possible assets, while cautioning that using a wider range of concepts may take time. Multiple coverages require players to recognize calls quickly and coordinate their responses.

Brown said, “We’re focused on defense for a couple days, and I like that because that’s where the game is going to be won or lost.” Nurse said the team had covered a lot and was emphasizing repetitions to help players become comfortable with play names. Tyrese Maxey also praised Brown’s communication and willingness to pick up the ball defensively and follow the coach’s direction.
The Inquirer’s October 3 report placed the camp work against prior-season context: Philadelphia ranked 17th in defensive efficiency, and Joel Embiid played 38 regular-season games. Those figures describe the preceding season; they do not establish that Brown’s adjustment or Nurse’s approach will change the team’s results.

How Brown is settling in off the court
Brown told Hine that his move from Boston was happening in phases: his belongings were arriving, and he was getting his family settled. He had also joined small-group workouts with player-development staff and younger players, and said he welcomed their questions and the chance to share what he has learned.
Brown singled out Maxey for helping him feel comfortable and welcome, calling his teammate “a great host.” That is Brown’s description of Maxey’s support during the transition.

What is not yet known
The camp reports do not establish how quickly Brown will internalize Philadelphia’s defensive calls, what his settled role will be once the season begins, or whether Nurse’s additional defensive options will improve results. Those outcomes remain unresolved in the reporting from October 1 and October 3, 2026.
