The move gives New Orleans another backfield option; it does not confirm Bentley has been promoted to the active roster or will play in a game.
What the Saints announced
In its October 1, 2026 transaction announcement, New Orleans said it signed Bentley and edge rusher David Ojabo to the practice squad, signed wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. from the practice squad to the active roster, and placed Etienne on injured reserve.
The distinction matters: Austin’s announcement explicitly says he moved to the active roster, while Bentley’s says he joined the practice squad. The confirmed transaction is a practice-squad signing, not an active-roster promotion.
Why New Orleans added another running back
Etienne’s injured-reserve placement left the Saints adjusting their backfield depth. In a report on the running-back group ahead of Atlanta, New Orleans listed Alvin Kamara, Kendre Miller and CJ Donaldson among its backs, with practice-squad players Zamir White and Bentley also in the picture.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Head coach Kellen Moore said, “I think Alvin and Kendre will handle that load really well.” The team report also described Donaldson as having found a specific role. Those comments provide the clearest available indication of the team’s immediate expectations; Bentley’s signing alone is not evidence that he will receive carries.
What is known about Bentley
The Saints list Bentley as a 5-foot-10, 200-pound running back from Mississippi. According to the team’s announcement, Indianapolis originally signed him after the 2025 NFL Draft. He spent parts of two seasons on the Colts’ practice squad and appeared in one game as a rookie.

College production reported by the Saints
Bentley played three seasons at SMU from 2019 through 2021, then three seasons at Ole Miss from 2022 through 2024. The following figures are from the Saints’ transaction announcement, not an independent statistical assessment:
- Across his final three Ole Miss seasons: 195 carries for 1,032 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and 13 rushing touchdowns.
- Over that same period: 25 receptions for 190 yards and one receiving touchdown, plus 14 kickoff returns for 272 yards.
- In 2024: 84 carries for 419 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and five rushing touchdowns, along with 13 catches for 99 yards.
What the signing does—and does not—establish
RotoWire’s October 1 transaction item also reported the practice-squad signing and connected the depth need to Etienne’s injured-reserve placement. It is a secondary summary; the Saints’ announcement is the primary record of the move.

The transaction creates a roster opportunity and adds depth while New Orleans navigates its backfield situation. It does not, on its own, establish an active-roster elevation, a place in the game-day lineup or a share of the workload. The Saints’ roster page lists Bentley in the practice-squad section, but roster listings can change.
