P.J. Washington is being considered for a starting spot with the Dallas Mavericks in 2026–27, but the team has not named an opening-night lineup. Coach Dusty May says Washington’s ability to play multiple positions puts him in the conversation; it does not guarantee him a place in the starting five.
Is P.J. Washington starting for the Mavericks?
Not officially. In an October 2, 2026, training-camp report, May said Washington is “certainly in the mix for a starting spot” because he can play multiple positions. May also said he did not expect Dallas to settle on its starting five soon. The latest available reporting establishes consideration, not a final lineup decision. Dallas Sports Journal reported May’s comments.
Why Washington fits more than one lineup
Small-ball center or small forward
May described Washington as an option at center in a small lineup and at the three in a bigger one: “If you want to play a small lineup, you can play the five. He can play the three for the bigger lineup.” May also cited Washington’s physicality, defensive understanding, instincts and ability to exploit mismatches.
Washington described a similarly broad role: guarding perimeter players and bigs, screening, handling the ball in pick-and-rolls and taking advantage of mismatches. That flexibility gives the coach ways to use him in different combinations, rather than tying his value to one position.

Starting history in Dallas
Washington’s recent role makes a starting spot plausible. Dallas Sports Journal reported that he started 137 of the 142 regular-season games he played for the Mavericks after the team acquired him from Charlotte in February 2024. CBS Sports/RotoWire gave a different sample: four bench appearances in 113 Dallas regular-season appearances over the previous two years. These are separate reported counts with different sample descriptions, not figures to combine. CBS Sports/RotoWire reported the latter figure.
What could affect the decision?
Frontcourt competition
CBS Sports/RotoWire noted that rookie Morez Johnson’s addition could complicate the frontcourt picture. That is a potential factor, not evidence that Johnson has won a role over Washington; the cited reporting does not establish a definitive head-to-head contest or name another confirmed starting candidate.

Recent shooting and overall production
Washington’s recent regular-season numbers provide context, not a forecast or an explanation for the lineup decision.
| Season | Games | Points per game | Rebounds per game | Assists per game | Three-point shooting |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024–25 | Not stated in the report | 14.7 | 7.8 | 2.3 | 38.1% (91-of-239) |
| 2025–26 | 56 | 14.2 | 7.0 | 1.8 | 32.5% (76-of-234) |
These season statistics were reported by Dallas Sports Journal. The decrease in three-point percentage from 2024–25 to 2025–26 is one relevant performance detail, but it does not establish how May will choose his lineup.

Availability is another consideration for any coach, but the report only notes that Washington missed time in each of the previous two seasons. It does not establish a current injury or provide grounds to infer one.
Washington says winning matters more than starting
Washington said, “For me, my biggest thing is winning. Whether I’m starting or not, I just want to win.” He added that he believes he can make an impact whether he starts or comes off the bench. That makes his public priority clear, even as the team evaluates its lineup.

What to watch for next
The practical signal will be a team announcement or a clear update from May as camp progresses. Until then, Washington is a credible starting candidate because of his versatility and history in Dallas, but any claim that he will start on opening night—or a particular number of games—is a projection, not a confirmed team decision.
