Kansas State and former men’s basketball coach Jerome Tang have reportedly settled their buyout dispute for $12 million. KMAN reported Oct. 1, 2026, that The Mercury confirmed the settlement with the university; KCTV separately reported the amount, citing ESPN’s Pete Thamel, and said payments would run through the end of 2027. The public sources located do not include a signed settlement agreement or an official university announcement of the deal.
What the reports say about the settlement
KMAN reported that Kansas State and Tang settled the buyout dispute for $12 million, and said The Mercury confirmed the amount with K-State. KCTV also reported a $12 million agreement, attributing it to ESPN reporter Pete Thamel. KCTV described the reported payment period as running through the end of 2027; it did not specify installments, dates or other payment conditions.
The reports differ in how they characterize the status: KMAN described the settlement as reached, while KCTV said the parties were finalizing it. Neither report supplies the signed agreement, and the sources located do not include an official settlement announcement. The amount and payment period should therefore be understood as reported terms, not terms independently verified here from a contract or court record. (KMAN; KCTV5)
How the reported $12 million compares with the disputed buyout
KMAN put the buyout at issue at about $18.7 million. That figure was reported as the disputed amount, not established as a court-determined entitlement. Comparing the two reported figures produces a $6.7 million difference, but that arithmetic alone does not establish Kansas State’s final savings: the figures are reported amounts, and the underlying settlement document is not available in the sources located.

Why Kansas State parted ways with Tang
Kansas State announced on Feb. 15, 2026, that it was parting ways with Tang, effective immediately. Athletic director Gene Taylor said the decision reflected Tang’s recent public comments and conduct and the direction of the men’s basketball program. “This was a decision that was made in the best interest of our university and men’s basketball program,” Taylor said in the university’s announcement. That statement explains the university’s position; it is not a legal ruling on the contract dispute. (Kansas State Athletics)
The dispute followed Kansas State’s 91–62 loss to Cincinnati on Feb. 11. The university’s game record confirms the score. KCTV reported that Tang criticized his players at the postgame press conference; the sources cited here do not include a primary transcript of those remarks. What Tang’s contract announcement said
Kansas State’s Sept. 25, 2023, announcement described a seven-year extension through April 30, 2030. Its public compensation summary listed a $3 million base salary for 2023–24, rising annually to $3.6 million in 2029–30, plus four retention bonuses of $200,000 each. Those announced contract terms provide context for the dispute, but they do not independently establish the amount owed after the university ended Tang’s employment or the terms of the reported settlement. (Kansas State Athletics)
Was Tang fired for cause?
KCTV characterized Kansas State’s action as an attempted firing for cause. The university’s Feb. 15 statement cited comments, conduct and the program’s direction, but that public statement is the university’s rationale—not an adjudicated conclusion about whether the contract permitted termination for cause. No court finding on that question is included in the sources located for this report.
