In her October 3, 2026 essay, she describes taking her children, then 11 and 9, to the polls as a way to help them understand how public decisions touch their lives and how people can take part in civic life.
Why Senecal brings her children to vote
“I want my kids to see democracy in action: something people do, not just something they learn about in school,” Senecal writes in her AOL essay. She says she has spent nearly 30 years at the League of Women Voters helping people participate in democracy; that experience is the perspective behind her personal account, not evidence that bringing children to polling places produces a particular long-term result.
For Senecal, voting offers a visible way to connect public decisions with places and services her children know: schools, parks, playgrounds, pools, libraries, roads, and bike lanes. She uses these examples to explain why decisions by elected officials matter to her family. They are her account of civic life, not a policy analysis of how any specific decision is made.
What she hopes her children learn
Participation is a practice
Senecal wants her children to see that civic involvement is something people do. “No one wakes up on their 18th birthday automatically knowing how to participate in democracy,” she writes. Familiarity with the process is part of what she hopes to build by bringing them along.

There are ways to take part beyond voting
She presents voting as one form of participation, alongside learning about issues, asking questions, contacting elected officials, speaking at school-board or city-council meetings, and organizing with others. “Voting is important, but it’s not the only answer.”
Children should reach their own conclusions
Senecal says she does not tell her children what to think or whom to support. Instead, she hopes they will seek reliable information, listen, ask questions, and form their own views. Her approach is to make room for discussion without turning the outing into an instruction about which choice to make.

Make the outing a conversation, not a lecture
Senecal’s account suggests a simple family approach: let children observe the process, answer questions in age-appropriate language, and talk about the issues that affect their community. She notes that voting can take longer when her children have questions, so allow time rather than treating the visit as a quick errand.
Her essay is personal testimony. It does not establish a recommended age for bringing children, demonstrate developmental benefits, or set rules for polling places. Whether children may accompany a voter—and what they may do there—depends on local rules. Check with the relevant election office before bringing a child or giving location-specific advice; do not assume that children may enter every polling place or handle ballots.
