Ohio State is the clear betting favorite, but Iowa has a credible path to keep this game close: defend well enough to disrupt the Buckeyes’ passing attack, then use its run game to sustain drives and limit possessions. The Hawkeyes arrive 4-0 and at home after a last-second win at Michigan; Ohio State brings one of the nation’s most productive early passing attacks. Here are the matchup factors and the odds available before kickoff.
Game details and pregame records
The teams meet Saturday, Oct. 3, 2026, at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City. Iowa’s game notes list kickoff at 2:39 p.m. Central and a CBS broadcast; Ohio State’s broadcast notice gives the corresponding time as 3:30 p.m. Eastern. The schools listed Ohio State at 3-1 and Iowa at 4-0, with rankings of No. 5/6 and No. 14/14, respectively. These are pregame records and rankings, not final-season results. Why Iowa can hang with Ohio State
The defense has produced striking early numbers
Through four games, Iowa’s Sept. 28 game notes said the defense was allowing 8.0 points and 239.8 total yards per game. The Hawkeyes had shut out Northern Illinois 40-0 and Northern Iowa 55-0; Iowa’s notes described the team as the only one with multiple 40-point shutouts in 2026 at that point. Those results show defensive potential, but two shutouts came against nonconference opponents, so they do not establish that Iowa can hold down Ohio State’s offense. (Iowa Athletics, 2026 game notes)
A run game that could help manage possessions
Iowa’s notes identify four 100-yard rushers during the 2026 season and report 422 rushing yards against Northern Iowa. That gives the Hawkeyes a plausible way to control tempo and keep Ohio State’s offense off the field. It is evidence of what Iowa has done, not a guarantee that those yards will be available against the Buckeyes.

Momentum and home field matter, but do not settle the matchup
Iowa’s most recent notable result was a 20-19 road win over No. 18 Michigan, completed by Hank Brown’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Reece Vander Zee as time expired. The school’s notes say it was Iowa’s first 4-0 start since 2021 and its first Big Ten ranked road win since 2015. A win at Kinnick gives the Hawkeyes a legitimate competitive setting; it does not make a repeat finish or an upset certain. (Iowa Athletics, 2026 game notes)
Why Ohio State is favored
The Buckeyes’ passing attack is the clearest matchup challenge
Ohio State’s Sept. 28 preview reported that quarterback Julian Sayin had thrown for 1,206 yards and 10 touchdowns through four games. Receiver Jeremiah Smith had 617 receiving yards and seven touchdowns over the same span. In a 38-14 win over Illinois, Smith caught 12 passes for 217 yards and four touchdowns; Sayin completed 27 of 36 passes for 367 yards and four passing touchdowns, and also ran for a touchdown. Those figures make Iowa’s ability to disturb the passing rhythm the central question. (Ohio State Athletics, 2026 preview)

Recent series results favor Ohio State, with limits
Ohio State’s preview lists a 48-15-3 series lead and wins over Iowa by 54-10 in 2022 and 35-7 in 2024. That history is useful context, but those games involved different seasons and rosters; it is not a direct forecast of the 2026 result. (Ohio State Athletics, 2026 preview)

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prediction: Iowa can be competitive, but Ohio State has the stronger case
Ohio State deserves favorite status: its passing production is substantial, and BetMGM’s Oct. 2 line made the Buckeyes 14-point favorites. Iowa’s case is narrower and conditional. If the defense can make Sayin work for completions and the offense can sustain enough drives on the ground, the Hawkeyes have a plausible route to keep the margin within reach. If Ohio State’s passing game produces explosive plays, Iowa’s early defensive averages and home field may not be enough.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That makes Iowa +14 a defensible lean for a reader who expects the Hawkeyes to slow the game, rather than a proven value bet. The supplied team statistics and sportsbook estimates do not establish that covering the spread is profitable; the key uncertainty is whether Iowa can translate its early defensive form against Ohio State’s higher-powered passing attack.
