Is The Wind Waker returning in October 2026?
There is no support in Nintendo’s reviewed October 2026 release roundup for a new launch of The Wind Waker this month. The roundup shows a selection of games coming in October and does not list the Zelda game; its dates were accurate when published, so later changes or announcements in other regions remain possible. The apparent “return” is better understood as ongoing access: Nintendo currently lists the original GameCube game in its GameCube Classics collection for Switch 2. Nintendo had already included it in the collection’s launch lineup, so the catalog listing is not evidence of a fresh October release. How to play The Wind Waker on Switch 2
- Use a Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo identifies Switch 2 as the platform for its GameCube Classics collection.
- Have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s launch announcement specifies this membership for access to the GameCube collection; check Nintendo’s current membership terms in your region.
- Open the Nintendo GameCube Classics collection and select The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Nintendo’s UK catalog currently lists the game among the collection’s titles.
This is subscription-library access, not a standalone Switch 2 edition or a new October purchase release. Regional catalogues and membership terms may differ, so consult Nintendo’s service information for your territory.

Do you need the GameCube-style controller?
No requirement for the special controller is stated in Nintendo’s cited launch information. Nintendo announced a wireless controller modeled on the original GameCube controller for paid Nintendo Switch Online members, but that announcement does not say it is required to play The Wind Waker. The controller is an optional accessory, not part of the access requirement.

What game is on the service?
