How God of War (2018) Made Its Unbroken Camera Work

God of War (2018) keeps its camera moving through gameplay and story scenes to make the journey feel intimate and continuous. That “no-cut” approach was not simply a visual flourish: it required the team to plan performances, stage combat, and build camera movement that could bridge player control and directed action without an edit to reset the scene.

Why God of War uses an unbroken camera

Creative director Cory Barlog said he wanted the unbroken shot for the intimacy it could provide. The camera stays close to Kratos and Atreus, making the player feel alongside them rather than watching a sequence assembled from detached angles. In a 2019 session description, the Game Developers Conference characterized the cinematography as a way to achieve deeper emotional tones while working within a limited vocabulary of cuts. (GDC Vault; British GQ, 2018)

The choice also made the camera part of the gameplay problem. In an edited cinematic, a cut can jump to a new position, hide a transition, or reframe the action. A continuous camera has to move between those viewpoints while remaining compatible with what the player is doing. Barlog described the challenge of moving smoothly from gameplay into cinematics and back; Santa Monica Studio’s technical overview notes the need to plan for Atreus’s many states as he shifts between narrative and gameplay. (Santa Monica Studio / PlayStation; British GQ, 2018)

How the team staged scenes for one continuous shot

Rehearsal and blocking came before capture

Director of Photography Dori Arazi’s account of the Ogre scene describes a process that began with paper staging, then moved into rehearsal in “real space.” The team used that rehearsal to test whether the planned action could work and to help performers internalize its pacing. Performers worked in scaled spaces, acting with props that stood in for other characters. This preparation mattered because the camera could not simply cut away if performers or action drifted out of position. (PlayStation.Blog, September 28, 2018)

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An early attempt to shoot the scene by watching on-stage monitors and using a stick to represent the camera made the limitation clear. Arazi said the test showed the team needed a more sophisticated virtual-camera system. The continuous shot seen in the game therefore did not mean the scene was improvised or captured as one unplanned performance; it depended on deliberately staged movement, rehearsal, and tools designed to support real-time camera work. (PlayStation.Blog, September 28, 2018)

Long performances demanded precise planning

Barlog told British GQ that scene positions and locations had to be planned exactly. The interview reported that some scenes ran upwards of four-and-a-half minutes, describing the difficulty of capturing a full performance from several actors while the camera moved smoothly between gameplay and cinematics. That figure applies to some scenes discussed in the interview, not to the game’s average scene length. (British GQ, 2018)

How combat stays readable without a cut

The Stranger fight shows how camera continuity changed combat staging. Senior Staff Combat Designer Denny Yeh said the camera moved closer to help sell the force of the punches. When a fight phase changed, however, the characters still had to reach the right positions without an edit to conceal the move. Yeh described the repeated iteration required to make those transitions work. (PlayStation.Blog, August 16, 2018)

The solution could be built into the action itself. Quick turns and heavy camera-shake impacts helped conceal some repositioning, using movement and impact to carry the transition rather than cutting to a newly composed shot. Yeh summarized the difficulty: “You’d be surprised how hard it is to get two characters into the right spot during gameplay without simply moving them in a camera cut.” (PlayStation.Blog, August 16, 2018)

How the camera changes perspective without cutting

Continuity does not mean the camera must keep one fixed point of view. In the Helheim boat sequence, Arazi describes the camera moving between third-person and first-person views to shift whose experience the player shares. The momentum of a punch carries the camera into Kratos’s remembered violence; it then swings toward Atreus to show his reaction. The viewpoint changes, and the emotional emphasis changes with it, while the shot remains continuous. (PlayStation.Blog, September 28, 2018)

What the no-cut approach changes compared with edited cinematics

Design problem Edited cinematic God of War’s continuous camera
Continuity A cut can reset time, position, or framing. Camera movement has to connect positions and viewpoints within the ongoing action.
Player agency The viewpoint can be determined entirely by authored edits. The camera must remain compatible with gameplay as control moves between player and directed sequences.
Performance and blocking An edit can cover a reposition or bridge performances. Movement and positioning need rehearsal and precise staging to work in real time.
Transitions A cut can hide a change in composition or character placement. Turns, impacts, and camera movement can make repositioning part of the action.
Point of view A cut can switch directly to another character’s perspective. The camera can redirect empathy through continuous movement, as in the Helheim boat scene.

These are qualitative differences described by the developers, not measured gains in immersion or production cost. The available accounts explain the creative and staging choices, but do not establish a system-wide count of cuts, typical scene duration, staff-hours, or camera-system performance.
