Wouter Vrancken says he rejected an offer from Bulgarian club Ludogorets that would have paid him double what he earns as Hearts manager. He says the people behind Hearts’ project, the club’s culture and life in Edinburgh mattered more than the higher salary. The report gives no exact salary, offer value or currency.
What did Ludogorets offer, and why did Vrancken say no?
A report published on 3 October 2026 by Yahoo Sports, carrying Herald Scotland reporting, says Vrancken described Ludogorets’ offer as worth “double what I do now.” He also said he had conversations with teams in France during the summer, but the report names no French clubs and does not establish that those discussions were formal offers.
The comparison is relative: the story does not disclose Vrancken’s Hearts salary, Ludogorets’ proposed pay, or a currency. Vrancken’s reported explanation was that he quickly developed a good feeling about the people behind Hearts’ project and was drawn to the club’s culture and Edinburgh. “If money had been the deciding factor, I would be in Bulgaria now,” he said.
He also said he followed advice from Vincent Kompany to pay attention to the people behind a project: “you need to have a good feeling about the people behind the project and I found that quickly at Hearts.” The report says Vrancken had no regrets about choosing the club. What did Vrancken say needs to change at Hearts?
More control and attacking football
Vrancken said Hearts’ previous approach put emphasis on organization and reacting to opponents, while he wanted the team to keep the ball and control more matches. “From day one, my intention was to play more football,” he said. He described the change as a transition that would take time.
A short pre-season before European qualifying
Vrancken attributed part of Hearts’ difficult European start to preparations arranged before he joined. He said the team had only three weeks to prepare before facing Sturm Graz in Champions League qualifying, after playing smaller Scottish sides. The report also describes Hearts exiting to Sturm Graz in qualifying and later to Benfica in the Europa League.

The story supports the narrow claim that Vrancken said he declined a Ludogorets offer he described as paying twice his current Hearts earnings. It does not establish an absolute salary, a precise offer, the terms of his Hearts contract, or whether any other club made a formal offer. Yahoo Sports and an inkl version credited to The National reproduce substantially the same reporting, so they are not independent confirmation of the interview claims.
