Former NYPD sergeant Atickul Islam pleaded guilty in federal court on September 30, 2026, to falsely impersonating a U.S. government employee. Prosecutors said he threatened a Queens woman and her family with immigration enforcement, then sent a second message posing as the director of ICE’s New York Field Office. Sentencing was scheduled for March 24, 2027; no sentence had been imposed as of October 3, 2026.
What Islam admitted and what prosecutors said happened
Islam pleaded guilty in Brooklyn federal court to one count of false personation of an officer or employee of the U.S. government. Inner City Press identifies the case as USA v. Islam, 25-cr-359, before Judge Dora L. Irizarry in the Eastern District of New York: its account of the plea proceeding.
The New York Daily News and QNS recount prosecutors’ account that Islam sent messages to a Queens woman between March 22 and March 29, 2025. The Daily News reports that a message sent from his personal phone on March 29 read: “ICE will come get you and your family and you will always live poor. Matter of fact I will make the phone call myself,” and then referred to knowing where the family lived. The reports say that about four hours later, he used a different number to claim he was “James W. Anderson,” the director of ICE’s New York Field Office. The message directed the woman and her family to report to an ICE location and threatened further legal action and enforcement measures. QNS says it was presented as an official notice.
During his plea, Islam said, “I sent a text message impersonating a federal field office director of ICE, via a cell phone,” according to the Daily News account. The plea establishes his admission to the false-personation charge; details about the messages and their context are attributed here to prosecutors and reporting.

What reporting says about the motive
The Daily News, citing law-enforcement sources, reports that the woman had rejected Islam’s romantic advances. U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella characterized the conduct as using lies and the threat of deportation to take revenge on a woman in Islam’s personal life. The woman has not been identified in the reports.
Nocella said Islam had used “lies and the threat of deportation to take revenge on a woman in his personal life.” He added that prosecutors expect officers at every rank to act with honesty and integrity and would not tolerate using federal law-enforcement threats for a personal vendetta. FBI Assistant Director in Charge James Barnacle, quoted by QNS, said the guilty plea showed that impersonating a federal officer is a serious crime that erodes public trust.
