Barker envisioned four initial titles in a shared setting he called the Barkerverse. But he described the books as mainstream Marvel comics, and the available evidence does not establish that Marvel formally designed Razorline as a Vertigo counterpart or a mature-readers line.
What was Marvel’s Razorline?
At the Sixth Annual Capital City Sales Conference in New York in May 1993, Barker presented Razorline as a new line of comics. He called the project “a marriage of minds” and said its books were “very much Marvel comics.” The initial four titles were meant to inhabit one setting, the Barkerverse. Marvel’s Internal Correspondence reported the presentation in June 1993, and Barker’s official website reproduces his remarks: Clive Barker’s Razorline presentation.
Barker’s official bibliography records Razorline: The First Cut, Vol. 1 No. 1 as a Marvel publication from September 1993: Barker’s comics bibliography. The line was therefore a real Marvel publishing initiative, not simply a later comparison made by readers.
Why compare it with Vertigo—and where does the comparison break down?
“Marvel’s Vertigo” works as a quick description of a creator-led project with an unconventional sensibility. It becomes misleading if it implies that Razorline was a formal Vertigo clone, an explicitly adult imprint, or a line Marvel executives publicly said they wanted to create. Barker’s own framing points in a different direction: he emphasized his enthusiasm for mainstream comics while promising mythologies more complex than straightforward muscle-and-gun superhero stories. The sources available do not document an explicit Marvel goal to reproduce Vertigo.

| Comparison | What the available evidence supports |
|---|---|
| Audience and tone | Barker called Razorline’s books “mainstream comics,” while describing their mythologies as more complex than simple superhero stories. [Barker’s 1993 presentation] |
| Creative model | Barker supplied the shared-world concepts, while writers and artists developed them collaboratively. He described the project as a “marriage of minds.” [Barker’s 1993 presentation] |
| Planned scale and publication | Archivist and co-author Phil Stokes recalled ten planned series, of which four were published. This is a retrospective count, not a comparative sales measure. [Looper interview with Phil and Sarah Stokes, 2022] |
There is no established comparison here of Razorline and Vertigo sales, readership, or contractual arrangements. The defensible comparison is about broad creative ambition, not proof of matching business models or audiences.
What was Barker trying to build?
Barker’s pitch reached beyond the four comics that began the line. In the text preserved on his official site, he described the larger concept as “the Decamundi,” ten new worlds populated by characters from his imagination, and said readers would have four worlds that summer: Barker’s Razorline presentation. That helps explain the line’s central idea: not four unrelated guest projects, but a creator-led collection of settings and characters connected by Barker’s vision.

His remarks also complicate the assumption that the books were intended to reject superhero comics or mainstream publishing. Barker said the comics reflected his own passion for the mainstream form, even as he wanted to take its stories and mythologies somewhere more elaborate.

In a 2022 Looper interview, archivist Phil Stokes recalled that ten series had been planned and four came out; the remaining six were expected in late 1993 or early 1994. Stokes attributed their non-publication to a contraction in the comics industry and said, in his assessment, that sales rather than a shortage of ideas were the problem. That is his retrospective explanation, not independently audited sales evidence or a documented Marvel business account: Looper’s interview with Phil and Sarah Stokes.

How to read the headline fairly
- Accurate: Marvel recruited a major British horror and fantasy creator to lead a distinctive comics line in 1993.
- Accurate with qualification: Razorline can be compared with Vertigo as a creator-led, unconventional initiative, but not as a proven attempt to duplicate that imprint.
- Not established: That Marvel formally positioned Razorline as a mature-readers line, or that it matched Vertigo in sales, readership, or business model.
