Steam generated an estimated $1.7 billion in September 2026, its strongest September on record, according to market-analysis firm Alinea Analytics. The figure is an analyst estimate, not a revenue disclosure from Valve. Alinea also forecasts that Steam will exceed $20 billion in revenue for the full year; that total has not yet been achieved or confirmed.
What the September record means
Alinea Analytics’ Rhys Elliott reported on October 1 that Steam’s September revenue was estimated at $1.7 billion, 13% above the previous September record, set in September 2025. Alinea Analytics’ September analysis is the source of the estimate. PC Gamer also reported the figure and attributed it to Alinea, rather than Valve. PC Gamer’s report
The distinction matters: Steam does not provide a monthly revenue figure in the material cited here. Alinea’s number should therefore be read as a third-party estimate, not an audited or official Valve result.
How the estimate fits into 2026
Alinea estimated Steam revenue at $5.5 billion for the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year, and $16.5 billion for the first nine months, 13% above the comparable period in 2025. Those are estimates for completed periods, while the full-year figure remains a forecast.

Alinea expects Steam to pass $20 billion in revenue in 2026, citing the release slate still to come. That projection is not a final annual result: the year is still in progress, and Alinea’s estimate could change.
What games contributed to September spending
Alinea’s breakdown covers its estimated top 500 grossing Steam games for September, not every transaction or title on the platform. Within that group, releases from 2026 generated 33.6% of revenue. New intellectual property introduced in 2026 accounted for 20.5%, while established IP made up about 79.5%; the categories distinguish release year from whether a property was new, so they should not be conflated.

| Measure, within Alinea’s estimated top 500 grossing games | Share |
|---|---|
| Revenue from games released in 2026 | 33.6% |
| Revenue from new 2026 IP | 20.5% |
| Revenue from established IP, including 3.8% from remakes and remasters | About 79.5% |
| Revenue from free-to-play games; those games were 16% of titles in the group | 25.6% |
These figures describe the composition of a selected top-grossing group, not Steam’s entire catalog or all of its estimated revenue. The strong showing for new releases alongside the larger established-IP share suggests both new launches and returning franchises were part of the month’s commercial picture.
Hardware costs were rising, but the connection is unproven
PC component costs provide relevant market context, not an explanation for Steam’s revenue. Fractal Gaming Group’s Q1 2026 interim report summarized outside estimates that DRAM purchasing prices rose 90–95% quarter over quarter and NAND prices rose 55–60%. These are reported market purchasing-price changes, not increases in retail prices paid by PC buyers. The report also relayed Gartner’s expectation that RAM would rise from 16% to 23% of total PC component cost year over year in 2026. Fractal Gaming Group’s Q1 2026 report

Neither those component-cost estimates nor Alinea’s Steam revenue figures establish that higher hardware costs caused people to spend more on games, or that they changed game spending in any particular direction. No causal study is cited here.

A 20,220 release count as of October 1, 2026 has appeared in reporting by Telset.id, but the underlying dataset and counting method have not been independently established in the material available. It is therefore not possible to verify the claim that Steam is approaching 21,000 releases as an official Valve tally. Counts can depend on whether they include all app types or only games, early-access launches, and how removals or release dates are handled. Telset.id’s report
