Minecraft Dungeons II makes the action-RPG genre easier to approach without removing build choices: its gear and enchantment combinations are presented in a more streamlined package. Diablo IV offers more interlocking character and item systems to learn and tune. That is a difference in design priorities—not proof that one game is objectively better or that Diablo’s depth is a problem for every player.
What the comparison really means
Minecraft Dungeons II is a narrative-driven action RPG, not the Minecraft sandbox built around exploration, gathering resources, and construction. Mojang describes it as a combat-focused adventure, so the useful comparison with Diablo IV is about how each game organizes combat, loot, and character decisions—not about building or open-world freedom. Mojang’s game FAQ also says you do not need to play the first Minecraft Dungeons to follow the sequel.
The title’s claim that Diablo makes things “too complicated” is a subjective judgment. In Xbox Wire’s June 2026 hands-on preview, editor Will Fulton argues that many contemporary ARPGs accumulate endgame systems for players who want to customize and min-max, and describes Dungeons II as increasing build expression while staying friendly and streamlined. Does streamlined mean there is no buildcrafting?
No. Mojang’s launch description names five loadout components—weapon, armor, enchants, talisman, and artifacts—and says players find and combine them to develop a playstyle. That leaves meaningful decisions about what to equip and how pieces work together; it is not a system-free action game. Mojang’s launch page characterizes the approach as flexible, but its “no right or wrong way to play” line is marketing language, not a promise that every combination will perform equally.
There is a practical trade-off to fewer layers: loot can still take attention. In his launch review, GamesRadar+’s Justin Towell praised the accessible start and experimentation but reported frequent loot checking, repetition, and bugs in his playthrough. Those are one reviewer’s observations, not guaranteed experiences for all players. Towell also said he completed the story in about 12 hours, including four hours in co-op and the rest solo; that is his run, not a completion-time estimate for every player. Is Minecraft Dungeons II easier than Diablo IV?
It is fair to call Dungeons II the more streamlined entry point based on the contrast in systems described by the publishers and Fulton’s demo preview. It is not established that every player will find it easier, or that Diablo IV is unnecessarily complicated. Diablo’s skill tree and passives, Paragon Boards, gear effects, item crafting, and upgrade systems give players more connected decisions to work through; for players who enjoy min-maxing, that breadth is a feature rather than friction.
Fulton describes the tension directly: “That’s great when I want a puzzle to min-max, but when I’m not in the mood to spend an hour re-speccing my whole build around a new item, it can be too much friction between me and the actual gameplay.” He presents that as his experience of the genre, then calls Dungeons II a middle ground between its predecessor and genre peers. It is a useful lens for choosing a game, not a complexity score or a universal verdict.

Which game fits your play style?
- Choose Minecraft Dungeons II if you want combat and co-op to be the focus, prefer a more approachable set of loadout decisions, or are introducing friends or family to an action RPG.
- Choose Diablo IV if you enjoy connecting skill choices, passives, equipment, and progression systems, and want more room to refine and rework a character.
- Consider both if you like action-RPG combat but want different levels of character-system commitment: an easier-to-enter structure does not necessarily replace the appeal of a deeper one.
Playing Dungeons II with friends and checking access
Minecraft Dungeons II supports solo play or groups of up to four, with online and couch co-op. Mojang’s FAQ says mixed co-op is supported, so players on one console or PC can join friends playing online, and it lists cross-play support.
