Codie Taylor has been named captain, but the starting XV and tactical plan remain unannounced ahead of Tests against Australia on October 10 and 17, 2026.
Who leads the All Blacks without Ardie Savea?
Savea is unavailable after shoulder surgery, and hooker Codie Taylor will captain the 34-player squad. Taylor also led the team in its final Test against South Africa, according to Rugby Australia’s September 29 report. Taylor called the appointment “a massive honour” and said he would be supported by other leaders in the group.
The selection question is broader than naming a single replacement: the squad has several loose-forward options, including Shannon Frizell, Ethan Blackadder, Peter Lakai, Wallace Sititi, Anton Segner and Simon Parker. The squad announcement does not identify who will take Savea’s place in the starting combination, or how the coaches will distribute responsibilities. Those answers must wait for the match-day team.
How much can Scott Barrett contribute after his return?
Lock Scott Barrett is back in the squad after back surgery and a long spell out. He returned to provincial rugby with Taranaki before being recalled; Rugby Australia’s report says he played just over 50 minutes in that appearance. That is a useful marker of recent game time, not confirmation that he is ready to start a Test or play a particular workload.

Coach Dave Rennie said Barrett’s experience and leadership would be welcome back in the group. The open question is how the selectors judge his role after limited minutes in his return, and whether he features against Australia. Squad inclusion alone does not settle either point.
Who gets the No. 10 jersey?
The first-five-eighth selection remains open. Rugby Australia identifies Beauden Barrett, Richie Mo’unga, Damian McKenzie and uncapped Josh Jacomb as the candidates. The report also notes that McKenzie could be considered at fullback, making the decision part of a wider backline balance rather than simply a four-way contest for one shirt.

No starter has been named, and the available information does not establish a preferred order among the four. The match-day selection should clarify whether the coaches choose an experienced Test option or give Jacomb a debut, and whether McKenzie is deployed at No. 10 or elsewhere.
Can New Zealand respond to the South Africa series?
The All Blacks arrive after losing their four-Test series against South Africa 3–1, according to Rugby Australia/AP NZ. Rennie described the tour as useful experience, saying the team learned about its game and itself. The Bledisloe is the next chance to show what the squad takes from that run, but the result—and the nature of any response—cannot be predicted from the squad announcement.

How much pressure will Australia bring to Eden Park?
Australia comes into the series encouraged by a dramatic upset of South Africa, as reported by Rugby Australia/AP NZ. The first Test is at Eden Park, where the same September 29 report recorded a 53-Test All Blacks winning streak dating to 1994. That is a notable historical run, not a guarantee of what happens in 2026.
New Zealand will also be returning home after eight games on the road. Rennie said the team was excited to open the series in front of its home crowd, while describing Australia as an experienced side that has played a lot of Test rugby together.
