Tell us who they were to you, what first brought you together in the game, and what changed afterward. The connection might have become a friendship, romance, mentorship, creative partnership, or a source of support during a difficult time—or it may have mattered while it stayed in-game.
What brought you together?
Was it a guild, a raid group, a shared quest, a trading connection, or simply seeing the same player around? What game were you playing, and when did the acquaintance start to feel like something more?
What did they change for you?
Maybe they helped you feel less alone, offered practical help or encouragement, introduced you to a new interest, or became part of your life outside the game. Or perhaps the important thing was having someone dependable to play with. What did they do that stayed with you?
Did the relationship move beyond the game?
Some MMO friendships become regular conversations elsewhere or lead to meeting in person; others remain meaningful without ever leaving the game. Did you stay in touch, lose contact, or continue adventuring together? What would you want that person to know now?

MMOs can be places where meaningful connections form
There is published research describing friendships and emotional relationships among MMO players, but it does not tell us how often a particular player’s life is changed. In a 2007 survey, Cole and Griffiths gathered responses from 912 self-selected MMORPG players in 45 countries. They reported that MMORPGs offered opportunities to form strong friendships and emotional relationships, including lifelong friends and partners. Because participants were self-selected, the study is not a representative estimate of how common those experiences are among all players. Read the study record.
A 2009 online survey of 206 World of Warcraft players found that respondents reported receiving social support through playing. The relationship between in-game support and fewer negative symptoms did not remain after accounting for offline support, so the finding does not establish that playing caused an improvement in wellbeing. The study also identified a small subgroup of 21 respondents who reported playing 44 to 82 hours per week, averaging 63.33 hours; compared with the rest of that sample, they reported lower offline social support and more negative symptoms. That result describes one subgroup in one survey, not a diagnosis or a general claim about frequent players. Read the study record.

A 2022 peer-reviewed conference study surveyed 402 World of Warcraft community members recruited through WoW-focused Discord and Reddit communities in March 2021. Its analysis described valued relationships, a sense of purpose, and relief from negative feelings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The one-game focus, community-based recruitment, and pandemic setting matter when interpreting the findings; they do not show how many MMO players have life-changing experiences. Read the study record.
Those studies offer context for why a connection made in a game can matter. They cannot answer the personal question for you. If someone you met in an MMO changed your life, share the moment that made the difference—and whether that connection is still part of your life.
