Why was the press conference cut short?
At the October 3 session, the day before Ireland’s Nations League fixture against Israel, an Israeli journalist asked head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson about a reported incident on a Flydubai flight travelling from the UAE to Israel. An Irish press officer said the session would take football questions. A journalist then alleged that Irish players had called Israeli players monkeys in the previous match. An FAI official immediately denied the allegation, calling it “completely untrue.” As the journalist objected while the microphone was taken away, the Irish delegation ended the conference, according to AFP’s report, syndicated by Yahoo Sports.
The allegation remains contested: AFP’s account reports the accusation and the FAI official’s denial, but does not independently establish that the alleged words were used. No official transcript or complete video of the October 3 exchange is available in the cited reporting.
What was the setting for the Ireland–Israel match?
The conference took place in Backa Topola, Serbia, ahead of the October 4 fixture. The Football Association of Ireland said UEFA had approved moving the match overseas to a neutral venue and holding it behind closed doors. The FAI cited operational challenges, said its board supported the decision, and noted support from UEFA following advice from An Garda Síochána. See the FAI statement of June 12, 2026.

How was this different from the September press conference?
A separate conference took place on September 26 in Debrecen, Hungary. There, FAI chief executive David Courell discussed squad deliberations about whether to fulfil the fixture. The transcript records that one player had expressed discomfort about participating. Hallgrímsson called the decision difficult and said the team was trying to limit harm to the group and Irish football. That discussion was not the October 3 incident in Backa Topola; see RTÉ Sport’s September 26 transcript.
What did Hallgrímsson say about the pressure on the team?
At the October 3 conference, Hallgrímsson told reporters, “Surviving this, coming out of it together as one would be a massive win for me.” He also said, “There’s been a lot of emotions from the people in Ireland about this, and obviously that affects the players as well.” AFP reported both remarks.
