The Dodgers named left-hander Tarik Skubal to start the series opener. MLB lists the game for Saturday, October 3, at Dodger Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT / 4 p.m. ET, with broadcasts on FOX, FOX Deportes and FOX One. MLB’s announcement and the Los Angeles Times report both confirm the selection and schedule.
Why are the Dodgers starting Skubal over Yamamoto?
The decision reflects two reported considerations: Atlanta’s struggles against left-handed pitching and how the Dodgers want to manage rest and workload across a five-game series. Choosing Skubal rather than Yoshinobu Yamamoto also means Yamamoto cannot start twice on regular rest during this NLDS, MLB reported. Those are planning factors, not evidence that one starter is certain to produce a better result.
Manager Dave Roberts characterized the options as close: “To be honest, we could really put all four guys in a hat and run them out there,” he told MLB. His comment underscores that the choice was about matchup and rotation planning rather than an announced judgment that the other starters were unavailable.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Blake Snell and Yamamoto were expected to start Games 2 and 3, without specifying a settled order. The Dodgers’ reported expectation should not be treated as a finalized rotation announcement; the available reports do not establish which pitcher will take which game.

What Skubal said about the start
Skubal called the assignment “an honor and a privilege” and said he trusted the coaching staff and teammates who gave him the ball. He also said he planned to stick to his usual preparation and approach, noting that the stage and environment change while the game itself does not. MLB’s report includes his full comments.
